Sandwell Council are looking for a dedicated and passionate Education Officer to join our Road Safety team to play a vital support role in the delivery of our Statutory Duties and commitments made within the new Sandwell Strategic Road Safety Plan 2024-2030.

In this role, you will play a crucial part in reducing road casualties across the borough, especially to children by working closely with highway colleagues, schools, local councillors, emergency services and strategic partners to promote road safety awareness and best practices. Therefore, the ability to communicate well is clearly a very important aspect of this role.

The main duties of the role will include developing, implementing, and supporting road safety educational, training and publicity programmes across the borough and wider West Midlands region.

This exciting role allows for the development and implementation of new and innovative ways of working and applicants can help grow and shape the role to best achieve the results required. In addition, there is scope for the role to be undertaken either full time or term time only depending on applicant’s needs and requirements.

As Sandwell’s Road Safety Education Officer and working alongside colleagues in the Development and Road safety team, your responsibilities will include,

  • Providing road safety education at nurseries and primary schools through assembly talks and in class workshops and training sessions.
  • Working alongside primary school children to produce school gate educational banners and resource material to be distributed to parents and careers.
  • Working alongside West Midlands Fire Service to organise and deliver a series of educational lessons and workshops at senior schools.
  • Representing Sandwell Council at local and regional Road Safety groups and partnerships.
  • Representing Sandwell Council at Multi Agency Road Safety Operations on the roadside supporting numerous emergency and enforcement agencies.
  • Working jointly with the road safety engineers to identify, create, promote, implement & evaluate road safety initiatives.
  • Continuing to develop new and innovation road safety educational and training programmes, packages and materials to be delivered to a wide range of stakeholders.
  • Embracing new technologies and developing innovative digital methods of brining road safety education to children and young adults.
  • Working with Sandwell’s Black Country neighbouring councils to deliver a series of road safety publicity campaigns and face to face training workshops focussed on young drivers and elderly drivers.
  • Providing advice and preparing replies to road safety education, training and publicity enquiries from elected members, MP’s, schools, members of the public and other stakeholders and outside organisations.
  • Taking responsibility for mentoring and motivating junior members of staff.

The role will also include assisting the senior engineer in overseeing and monitoring the council’s School Crossing Patrol (SCP) service, operated by individual schools, by undertaking yearly risk assessments and the training of new crossing patrol operatives.

We would therefore love to hear from applicants who can demonstrate:

  • A recognised training qualification or significant demonstration of experience in education, training, and development.
  • Minimum Level 4 Educational attainment.
  • GCSE in Maths and English Grade C (or Equivalent) or higher.
  • Minimum of 2 years’ experience working with children, parents or the public, with a proven ability to develop and deliver high quality educational and/or training materials.
  • Knowledge and understanding of educational and evaluation techniques.
  • A willingness to undertake continual training in relevant skills, knowledge and competencies.
  • Ability to view road safety problems from a road user’s and particularly child’s perspective.

The key requirement is the ability to successfully get across ideas and concepts to members of the public, and particularly children, to provide them with lifelong skills that may one day save their life.
