Hybrid Working

An exciting opportunity has arisen for MST CAN Supervisor to join the newly developed MST CAN Team in Sandwell. This is a funded pilot programme from the Youth Endowment Fund and supported by MST-UK & Ireland running from October 24 to September 26. This pilot will have an external evaluation led by Universities of Kent and Teesside.  

MST CAN is a home-based intensive treatment for families with children and young people subject to a Child Protection Plan under the category of neglect or physical harm. It is an evidenced based treatment that has been developed to work with families with complex needs, in order to increase safety and keep children at home.

MST CAN works to address specific problems and risk factors that brought the family to the attention of Children’s Social Care. The major goals are to keep families together, assure that children are safe, prevent abuse and neglect and reduce mental health difficulties experienced by adults and children, including addressing the impact of past trauma and increase natural support networks.

MST CAN adopts an intensive approach (numerous sessions per week) and works with families in their natural ecology (their home, school and wider community) rather than in a clinical setting. Appointments are made to meet the family’s needs and an MST CAN Practitioner is available 24/7 to all families in treatment through an on-call rota.

The role: -

  • To oversee the development and delivery of comprehensive Multisystemic Therapy (MST) Child Abuse and Neglect (CAN) interventions within Sandwell. MST CAN is a therapeutic approach requiring intensive work with families at their homes for up to nine months. This work is undertaken with families with complex needs where there is a child or young person aged 6 – 17 living at home who are subject to a child protection plan due to child abuse and neglect and who is at risk of entering care.
  • To provide clinical and line management / supervision to a team of MST-CAN practitioners (3 x MST CAN Therapists and 1 x MST CAN Family Resource Specialist) in line with MST-CAN principles including individual supervision to target clinical competency needs and to remove barriers to effective implementation of MST CAN treatment, quality assurance processes and licence requirements. This will also include reviewing weekly updates on work with families, leading weekly MST CAN group supervision and working closely with an external MST-CAN Consultant from MST-UK & Ireland.
  • To undertake audit policy and research activities, including collaborating with external evaluators, proposing and implementing policy and service development changes, supporting and facilitating such changes with a view to reducing incidents of child abuse and neglect and reducing the number of ‘out of home’ placements.
  • Communicate and record highly sensitive, complex and challenging clinical information about children, young people and their families, using creative and flexible communication methods to ensure meaningful engagement.
  • There is also an expectation to be on call evenings and weekends as part of a duty system. 

About you:-

  • You will have a professional qualification in in social work, psychology or another relevant field and also have experience and knowledge of Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, pragmatic Family Therapy, and/or behavioural interventions. Full training and continuous professional development in the MST CAN model will be provided.
  • Significant experience of managing a team/service, and excellent skills in, safeguarding and risk management in families where there are complex social, emotional and mental health issues.
  • Experience of handling conflict and managing sensitive issues to achieve positive outcomes, including resolving complaints and responding to stakeholders including elected members.
  • Experience of working with research or evaluation colleagues.
  • Experience of building trusting relationships with families, colleagues and partner agencies.
  • Sound knowledge and understanding of legislation, policy and practice guidance relating to children and families and its application to practice including safeguarding legislation.
