Located in the West Midlands, Sandwell is a metropolitan borough in the Black Country, which is made up of six towns: Oldbury, Rowley Regis, Smethwick, Tipton, Wednesbury, and West Bromwich. The borough is full of opportunity and investment potential, having excellent access to the national motorway network with five junctions feeding into the M5 and M6 motorways serving the South West, South East, and North West regions of the UK.

The Urban Design and Building Services Department within the Strategic Assets and Land Service Area is one of the fastest growing departments within Sandwell Council. Due to this exciting and structured growth, a fantastic permanent opportunity exists for a lead designer to join the service and support this expanding work area. You will be working with a diverse team made up of highly skilled and self-motivated individuals.

As the lead designer, you will be responsible for providing a full range of pre- and post-contract design services while undertaking project management duties to ensure successful project delivery. The team delivers a full range of advice and construction services on a variety of new build, re-modelling, and refurbishment projects on behalf of the council’s internal and external clients, including housing, education, and leisure schemes ranging from £10k to £20m+.

Candidates will be educated to degree level in a relevant subject, with a minimum of three years’ relevant post qualification experience.


37 hours per week. Hybrid working pattern: currently, 2 days per week in the main council office in Oldbury
