An exciting opportunity has arisen for an Employment and Education Officer within Sandwell Youth Justice Service. This role will require you to work closely with young people to support them in ensuring that they are aware of education, training and employment provisions available to them and in accessing these with your support, in order to reduce the risk of offending.

Safeguarding and Public Protection responsibilities are a fundamental part of this role and must be upheld in line with policies and procedures at all times.

The post holders’ responsibilities will be: -

  • To work with children and young people within the YJS in the areas of accessing, re-engaging and promoting regular school attendance and accessing training and employment (both community and custody).
  • To build relationships with education and training providers with a view to impacting on young people’s educational engagement and outcomes.
  • To provide specialist advice to all staff in respect of guidance, information, knowledge and understanding of school protocols and processes and expectations surrounding children/young people’s attendance, objective and goals.
  • To be responsible for ensuring the YJS has an effective SEND response and is up to date with relevant changes as these develop.
  • To provide hands on support for young people with identified education needs (i.e. learning, attendance, attainment) to enable them to achieve positive educational outcomes.

Candidates will need to have: -  

  • NVQ Level 4 in Child Care/Youth Work or other relevant qualification e.g. Education & Youth Offending.
  • Experience of working with young people who have offended or have complex needs and are having difficulties in their education experience.
  • Have at least 3 years experience in a relevant role.
  • Have up to date knowledge of relevant education legislation and knowledge of SEND/EHCP reforms.
  • Effective negotiator, able to assist and deliver on policy and work to best outcomes of young people.
  • Able to write clear and concise reports often within limited timescales.
  • Excellent organisational skills.
  • Excellent communicator.
  • Flexible and creative in approach.
