Hybrid Working

Hours - 37 per week

Fixed term contract until October 2026

Salary – Band E  SCP 18 – 25 (£29,269 - £33,945 per annum)  plus excellent benefits

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an MST CAN Family Resource Specialist to join the newly developed MST CAN Team in Sandwell. This is a funded pilot programme from the Youth Endowment Fund and supported by MST-UK & Ireland running from October 24 to September 26. This pilot will have an external evaluation led by Universities of Kent and Teesside.

MST CAN is a home-based intensive treatment for families with children and young people subject to a Child Protection Plan under the category of neglect or physical harm. It is an evidenced based treatment that has been developed to work with families with complex needs, in order to increase safety and keep children at home.

MST CAN works to address specific problems and risk factors that brought the family to the attention of Children’s Social Care. The major goals are to keep families together, assure that children are safe, prevent abuse and neglect and reduce mental health difficulties experienced by adults and children, including addressing the impact of past trauma and increase natural support networks.

MST CAN adopts an intensive approach (numerous sessions per week) and works with families in their natural ecology (their home, school and wider community) rather than in a clinical setting. Appointments are made to meet the family’s needs and an MST CAN practitioner is available 24/7 to all families in treatment through an on-call rota.

The role:-

  • MST CAN is a therapeutic approach requiring intensive work with families in their home for up to nine months. Work will be undertaken with complex cases involving children and young people aged 6 – 17 involved in recent incidents of child abuse and neglect, who are at risk of entering care or custody, due to concerns about abuse and neglect.
  • To support and assist the delivery of MST CAN Interventions, working alongside MST-CAN therapists, and contribute to reducing the number of children and young people entering care Interventions address the underlying issues which contribute to child abuse and neglect within a family and community setting under the supervision of the MST CAN Supervisor and MST-CAN Consultant.
  • The postholder will promote, develop and sustain successful partnerships that ensure the inclusion of children, young people and families receiving treatment. The postholder will work collaboratively with the MST CAN Team to meet the needs of the children, young people and families receiving treatment.

About you:

  • NVQ level 3 or above in social care, education, health, Youth and community service or Early Years Experience in working with children and families in a community setting, including child abuse / neglect and/or adult mental health or substance abuse. Experience of working with an evidence-based programme and working within a specific treatment model (desirable but not essential) Experience of working with families where there are child protection concerns. Experience of safeguarding and identifying safety concerns and risk factors Working with young people/families presenting high levels of risk and anti-social behaviour. To work flexible hours, including weekends and evenings.
