Hallmoor School is an inclusive, forward-thinking and popular specialist school for pupils aged 5 to 19 years with a range of diagnosis including Learning Difficulties, Autism and Complex Needs. The number on roll has increased to almost 300 children in recent years with further growth expected. We are considering some exciting possibilities for the future, which can only be delivered by an exceptional Headteacher. The school has been through significant change and improvement in recent years under the stewardship of incumbent Headteacher, Paul Donkersloot, culminating in it being graded ‘Good’ by Ofsted in December 2023.
We are looking for a new Headteacher who can share our excitement about the next stage of development, building on its success and continuing its positive journey to excellence. You will play a critical role in driving the school forwards by working with and developing a talented group of senior & middle leaders and a dedicated, caring staff team. The school is supported by a wide multi-disciplinary team, which includes speech & language therapists and occupational therapists to ensure that pupils access therapeutic interventions, a Family Support Worker and a Counsellor who contribute to support for families and carers.
The school is part of Forward Education Trust (FET), an established and developing MAT of 7 special schools in Birmingham, Solihull and Sandwell. The Trust believes that its staff and leaders are its most important asset and that valuing them and utilising their many talents will deliver the best experiences for pupils. You will be empowered to make decisions and to be creative. You will join supportive and well-established collaborative networks, where colleagues support each other and we learn from each other. The Trust will have a real interest in your future and will be keen to explore ways that you can develop personally and professionally.
The successful candidate will be an exemplary leader, teacher and role model with leadership experience of working in special education. Experience of teaching pupils with complex learning difficulties and of having worked with different age groups would be useful and you must be ambitious for all learners, whatever their additional needs. You must have the ability to initiate and lead change in a positive way which makes a real difference to learning and above all, share the school’s commitment to ensuring the students are safe and happy and achieve their full potential. Working in a supportive Trust environment must be central to your thinking, receiving and giving capacity to the wider network of schools.
Contact Martin Blair at Hays Leadership for a confidential discussion, to arrange a visit to the school, to discuss making an application or to arrange an informal conversation with the Trust’s CEO, Simon Dilkes. Martin will provide candidates with a link to the Forward Education Trust Applicant’s website to complete a formal application.
Interviews: Thursday 27 and Friday 28 September 2024

The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.
There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:
- A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
- An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
- A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
- A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
- A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.
We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.
We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision. We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.
In return, we offer you excellent terms and conditions, generous annual leave, a great pension scheme, well-being support, annual travel passes and discounts at a number of city centre establishments.
