The Public Health Division works across the council plan and is responsible for providing strategic leadership to develop the Council into a local authority that actively promotes population health. This will be achieved by being able to visualise and describe what a healthy Birmingham looks like and then equip others to share our vision and take action. We achieve this by championing the improved health and wellbeing of all citizens, but especially the most vulnerable.
Our vision is to improve and protect the health and wellbeing of Birmingham’s population by reducing inequalities in health and enabling people to help themselves.
The work of the Public Health division is underpinned by three values:

Role Context
This permanent, full-time role will be based within the Children & Young People Team in Public Health. This team leads the work on Children and Young People’s public health and oversees the commissioning of many mandated public health services including the Healthy Child Programme.
This role will provide specific support with Birmingham’s Healthy Schools Approach, to better the health and wellbeing of children and young people through schools. The postholder will report to the Public Health Senior Officer (CYP) leading on the Birmingham Healthy Schools Approach.
This role provides a fantastic opportunity to work on a programme from development through to evaluation and wider roll-out, developing many key public health skills and competencies. The postholder will be expected to assist with the roll-out and delivery of the Healthy Schools Approach across the city, liaising with school staff, key stakeholders and colleagues from across the local authority. The postholder is also expected to assist with the management of any pre-existing contracts and procurement of future contracts. The postholder will be expected to assist with the evaluation of the delivery and the impact of the programme.
This role is designed for someone who has a passion for improving and protecting the health and wellbeing of children and young people in Birmingham. You must have some working knowledge of the Children and Young Peoples agenda. Strong negotiation, communication and written skills are essential for this role.

- Has experience of working with a wide range of partners and stakeholder in supporting Public Health outcomes.
- Can interact with diverse communities of Birmingham and is passionate about reducing health inequalities.
- Has experience of delivering performance and governance arrangement and developing and implementing improvement programmes.
- Understands the role that the Health and Wellbeing board can play to improve health and wellbeing.
- Has knowledge and understanding of Public Health priorities.
