City of Birmingham School is seeking an ambitious, inspirational, and enthusiastic professional to join our SENCO team in the newly created post of Deputy SENCO. The team, when complete, will consist of a Strategic SENCO and 2 Deputy SENCOs, leading the SEND provision across all our sites.

This position is a key appointment to the school, and as the SENCO team develops, we envisage significant changes in how we meet the needs of our pupils. Being a key part of leading these changes will be an exciting opportunity. The successful candidate will need to hold or be willing to complete a SENCO qualification.

This is an exciting time to join our journey of improvement and play a key part in transforming the lives of our young people. Despite their vastly different educational experiences, we passionately believe that our pupils have the potential to access and achieve the same standard of national qualifications as their peers in mainstream schools.

Situated in centres across the city, our specialised teams of teachers and support staff work together to support pupils with complex social, emotional needs, and challenging behaviours. As the Pupil Referral Unit for Birmingham LA, we provide for those pupils who have been, or are at risk of, permanent exclusion, Children in Care, and those experiencing emotionally based school refusal. Additionally, our Outreach Team offers a traded service to local schools.

The size of our setting allows for a vibrant CPD programme and opportunities for rapid career progression. We have an approachable and supportive Leadership Team who encourage staff and actively promote work-life balance.

We can offer you:

  • a forward-thinking school, striving for continual improvement and innovation
  • a welcoming and friendly school with a positive ethos
  • a place to build positive relationships to support and care for children and help meet their needs
  • a supportive, enthusiastic, dedicated, and highly motivated staff and governors
  • opportunities to be part of delivering an exciting curriculum
  • the opportunity for continuing professional development

The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
  • An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
  • A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
  • A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
  • A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.

We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.

We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision.  We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.
