Haberdashers’ Abraham Darby is passionate about learning in its widest sense. Our mission is to ensure that our pupils value and enjoy their learning inside and outside the classroom
The ADAPT and THRIVE provisions are two of our alternative pathways and a fundamental part of our pastoral support. The provisions support KS4 / KS3 learners, who have a variety of Social, Emotional and Mental Health (SEMH) needs and require a more bespoke environment to access a broad and balanced curriculum.
Aims of Post of Responsibility: The Academic Mentor will provide academic support, both within the classroom and as part of targeted intervention sessions, to pupils attending our THRIVE provision. All pupils in this provision have identified Social, Emotional and Mental Health needs (SEMH). Some pupils have an Education, Health and Care Plan (EHCP).
Responsible to: Head of Pathways, and ultimately to the Principal
Specific Responsibilities
Work with classroom teachers and Pathway leads to identify pupils in need of additional support, particularly with numeracy and literacy skills.
Work with Subject/Class teachers and the Subject Leader to devise appropriate catch-up programmes to support identified pupils in closing knowledge and skills gaps at KS3.
Provide individual and small group support for pupils in line with their EHCP plan or individual support plan.
Attend subject lessons to work with the class teacher and to facilitate small group within class tutoring.
Keep records of topics/concepts covered and evidence of pupil progress.
Attend department meetings to discuss pupil progress outcomes.
Use a range of teaching approaches to engage potentially disengaged learners, thinking ‘outside the box’ as required.
Form and maintain positive relationships with pupils and their parents, appreciating that there may be several barriers to learning.
Attend regular meetings as required.
