Main purpose

To work collaboratively with pupils, parents/carers and staff members to promote positive behaviour among all pupils, and to help pupils succeed with modelling the positive values of the school.

Examples of main duties and responsibilities

  • Support for pupils
  • Act as first response to support pupils whose behaviour in a lesson requires intervention, helping them to have good behaviour and to succeed in lessons.
  • Support the successful reintegration of pupils following internal isolation or suspension.
  • Support pupils to be able to make informed choices about their own learning, behaviour, and attendance, and to understand the links between these.
  • Build and maintain productive relationships with pupils, acting as a role model and mentor where relevant, building resilience and self-confidence in identified pupils.

Working with and supporting staff

  • Work closely with relevant staff to monitor pupil progress and suggest appropriate strategies that could help improve the behaviour of identified pupils.
  • Work with the Designated Safeguarding Lead (DSL) to support staff to understand behaviour that suggests pupils may be experiencing a mental health problem or be at risk of developing one.
  • Monitor the implementation of the school’s behaviour policy and procedures through lesson support, and feedback to the SLT Behaviour Lead and pastoral team where appropriate and relevant.
  • Liaise with the pastoral team, passing on any relevant information where required and carry out agreed actions that might be created from behaviour support plans.

Work with parents/carers

  • Build and maintain positive relations with parents/carers of pupils you are working with to ensure excellent home/school communication and support.
  • Maintain timely communication of mentoring plans; successes and areas to develop so that parents/carers can play a pro-active role in supporting improved behaviour from the pupil.

Other areas of responsibility

  • Safeguarding
  • Work in line with statutory safeguarding guidance (e.g., Keeping Children Safe in Education, Prevent) and our safeguarding and child protection policies.
  • Work with the DSL to promote the best interests of pupils, including sharing concerns using the relevant information sharing platform (currently CPOMs) where necessary.
  • Promote the safeguarding of all pupils in the school.
