The role of a firefighter is varied and encompasses a whole range of duties that are less obvious than that of responding to incidents. The majority of the role of a firefighter is dedicated to helping to keep the communities of Staffordshire safe by undertaking prevention work.

Our firefighters are dedicated to protecting every member of the community and our aim is to reduce the operational incidents that we attend which can result in damage to property, injury and loss. Our prevention work within communities includes:

• Safe and well checks

• Educating children in schools

• Undertaking business premises checks

• Carrying out a range of prevention work within the community

When it is necessary, however our staff are ready to respond to any call 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year. Crews are trained to respond to a whole range of challenging situations including:

• Fires

• Road traffic collisions

• Floods

• Animal rescues

• Water rescues

• Incidents involving hazardous materials

In order to become a firefighter you must be able to demonstrate a number of personal attributes which you will be required to adhere to in all aspects of your work. These include:

• Confidence

• Resilience

• Integrity

• Adaptability

• Commitment to an inclusive and diverse workplace

• Effective communication


All successful applicants will undergo the Firefighter Apprenticeship which will be your development programme. Your initial training (Core Skills) will be delivered over a 15 week period and further training modules are required within a 24 and 36 month period.

Training starts Friday 31st August, runs Monday to Friday and will conclude week commencing 17th December 2018. Please note you will need to be available for the duration of the whole course. In addition you will be required to support a weekend Charity event of your choosing.

Additional information

We have outlined the recruitment time line and you will need to be available to attend at each stage. The actual dates available may vary slightly due to the number of candidates successful at each stage but you will be notified in advance when you are required to attend.

If successful you must be prepared to work anywhere in the county of Staffordshire and be prepared to work shifts, evenings, weekends and Bank Holidays.

If you are an existing firefighter, either retained in Staffordshire or you currently work for another Fire and Rescue Service and you wish to join Staffordshire in a Wholetime position, you will still need to complete and be successful in the recruitment process and undertake the full apprenticeship if appointed.

Closing Date for receipt of your application is – midnight on Monday 19th February 2018. You will be unable to submit an application from 00:01 on Tuesday, 20th February.

The next stage of the Selection Process will be based on the results of the Online Assessments. The results of these tests help us to decide on your suitability to become a Firefighter.
