Thank you for your interest in joining us as an On-Call Firefighter.
Our recruitment process is designed to take 12 weeks and subject to Service need, we will start a new process every 6 weeks. For you to be employed within 12 weeks will naturally be dependant on you attending and passing each stage of the process at the appropriate time.
The first stage of this process is the Expression of Interest, which will be reviewed by the Station Commander and you will be progressed on to the next stage if appropriate.

We have 25 Fire stations across the 2 counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire. All stations have an on-call fire engine, which is crewed by a dedicated team of women and men who work or live in their local communities and respond to emergency calls during contracted hours.
We offer a range of contracts with cover starting from as little as 40 hours up to 120 hours a week (ie the number of hours you are available to be on-call throughout the week),where you can earn £4,000 to £8,000 a year, sometimes more. with flexibility and paid annual holidays built in.
Once employed , you will also be required to attend a weekly training session, usually held on a weekday evening at your local fire station. (Please note you will be asked to confirm that you are available to attend this when submitting an expression of interest form to us).

Full training, uniform and personal development is provided and there are many opportunities to gain additional skills and qualifications that will be of use outside the fire service.

You must be aged 18 or over and work or live within five minutes of one of our fire stations.
You need to be able to safely reach the fire station within 5 minutes of being alerted. If you are in any doubt, it may be useful to check an online route finder as a guide although you can discuss this with the Station Commander.
We ask for an average level of fitness and strength and will provide full support in helping you understand and achieve what this means.
Please consider whether you are prepared to work at height, work in enclosed spaces or work in highly stressful situations, helping people in distress and administering first aid.

Please be aware that from the 1st November 2023 those newly appointed to the role of an On Call Firefighter will be required to undertake a standard Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check and this will be carried out as part of the recruitment process.
From the 1st September 2023 those newly appointed to the role of On Call Firefighter will be required to undertake a Social Media screening check. This will be carried out during the pre employment checks stage of the recruitment process and will be arranged by the Recruitment Team.

Hereford & Worcester Fire and Rescue Service is responsible for providing day-to-day fire and rescue services across the two counties of Herefordshire and Worcestershire.
Our stations are staffed by a mix of 'wholetime' firefighters - operating on a full-time basis and providing an immediate response - and ‘on-call’ firefighters who work and live in their local communities and respond to emergency calls whenever they are needed.
