We require one or more members of staff to cover out of hours animal care on our working school farm. You will be responsible for the daily feeding, watering and health checking of our herds of pigs, sheep, ponies, goats, poultry and all of our small animals and for reporting any problems to the Head of Department.
The vast majority of our animals are friendly and a pleasure to work with as they are used to being handled by our students. We are improving our facilities all the time and this is an exciting opportunity to become involved in a prominent yet still developing school farm project which is focussed on meeting the needs of our students as well as contributing to rare breeds conservation.
Candidates must be able to demonstrate experience of working with at least one of the large animals which we keep and your ability to maintain basic animal welfare will be assessed as part of the interview process. You must be willing to work outside in all weathers though many of our animals are housed indoors during the winter.
This role is suitable for a job share - see information below. It would be advantageous to have your own car as some of our fields are a short distance from your main place of work, however this is not essential to be appointed to the role.
Hours of work:
Total hours available across the year: 320 (208 over one day each weekend and 112 in total during school holidays)
A morning and evening shift each of two hours per day or one four hour shift (if this option is preferred, the work must be undertaken somewhere within the window of 9am and 4pm).
Days of work:
One day each weekend, all year round. There is some flexibility in this as it is not essential that it is the same day each week, exact days of work will be negotiated with the Head of Department to suit both parties.
28 days during the school holidays and/or as additional weekend shifts at the request of the Head of Department but with some flexibility, though some dates are fixed and known well in advance. It is likely that most of these dates will fall during Easter, May half term, the summer holidays and October half term.
We would like to hear from anyone who has experience of working with animals and is confident in carrying out routine care of a range of different species. We encourage applications for job sharing this particular role in order to give the most flexibility to all staff concerned. Please ensure you state in your covering letter which shifts/hours you would prefer, or if you would only be interested in being considered for the full 320 hours as one post.
