NABIS Business Support Officer
About the role:
A unique opportunity has arisen to join NABIS as an Intelligence Business Support Officer on a permanent basis in Birmingham. As an Intelligence Business Support Officer you will provide an efficient administrative or technical service for the NABIS Intelligence Cell to include the maintenance and development of systems and procedures, performance management, and the development and supervision of staff where required. You will support the intelligence research and administration function of NABIS, targeting firearms related criminality.
Within your role you will provide front line support and advice on criminal use of firearms intelligence issues to law enforcement colleagues and effectively deal with Intelligence requests for information. Liaising with Europol, Interpol, Firearms Manufacturers, the UK Military, Border Force, the National Crime Agency and UK Police Forces, you will conduct National and International firearms tracing requests.
As the Intelligence Business Support Officer you will conduct research concerning firearms nominals utilising national systems including PNC and PND and in-house / local systems to provide information for nominal profiles and for data sharing with other law enforcement agencies including the NCA and internationally with Europol, in addition to keeping the NABIS database up to date with the results of search research where appropriate. You will process and evaluate intelligence in accordance with policy, disseminating as appropriate considering any security of information implications.
You will collate, manage and disseminate intelligence reports and assist with strategic assessment, practice advice and doctrine relating to firearms crime. You will be required to prepare reports and assessments and deliver presentations to audiences and partner agencies outside of NABIS. You will be required to take appropriate security precautions to manage intelligence and information in accordance with current Data Protection Regulations. You will support quality assurance assessments and report on requests and anomalies within the NABIS intelligence process and will assist in the audit and inspection processes.
The National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) provides fast time intelligence linked to the criminal use of firearms. NABIS is tasked with linking firearms incidents across the UK to help develop a national understanding of the use, supply, importation and manufacture of illegal firearms. NABIS forms part of UK policing as part of the NPCC’s portfolio, and works closely with the National Crime Agency, UK Border Force and Government Departments.

You will be able to demonstrate that you have good planning and organisation skills, a good level of numeracy, as well as effective IT and written and verbal communication skills. You will also have knowledge of relevant legislation, guidelines and procedures.
You will also be able to demonstrate your skills in:
- Preparing management information
- Maintaining systems
- Providing support and guidance to colleagues and external contacts
- Preparing and actioning correspondence
- Conducting research
- Preparing reports
It is desirable, but not essential, that you have experience of working within law enforcement intelligence and / or firearms intelligence, are a trained PNC / PND user and have experience of the NABIS database.
Due to the nature of the role you will be required to undertake / currently hold Security check (SC) level vetting.
