NABIS Information Assurance Officer
About the role:
A unique opportunity has arisen to join NABIS as an Information Assurance Officer on a permanent basis in Birmingham. You will provide support for the performance analysis and database function within NABIS by researching and analysing performance and organisational information available from assessment of Force Performance Metrics and the NABIS Database. You will also deliver external training to force.
As the Information Assurance Officer within the NABIS performance management team you will be responsible for providing the information quality assurance to assist the organisation to improve its information management practices. You will work with NABIS and police force IT systems to identify areas of risk in relation to information management and advise on activity to improve performance.
You will provide data for statutory obligations including Freedom of Information requests and assist in auditing force systems in support of legislative requirements to ensure appropriate use of systems and assure the security and quality of information held on NABIS systems. Within your role you will assist NABIS to support Home Office requirements in relation to information assurance and meet our requirements under the Data Protection Act, the Management of Police Information (MoPI) guidance, and Information Security controls.
The National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) provides fast time intelligence linked to the criminal use of firearms. NABIS is tasked with linking firearms incidents across the UK to help develop a national understanding of the use, supply, importation and manufacture of illegal firearms. NABIS forms part of UK policing as part of the NPCC’s portfolio, and works closely with the National Crime Agency, UK Border Force and Government Departments.

You will able to demonstrate that you have good planning and organisation skills, as well as effective IT and written and verbal communication skills. You will be able to demonstrate how you have built effective relationships with internal and external partners in a working context. You will be expected to have or develop a good knowledge of MoPI, the Data Protection Act, the Government Security Classification Scheme, and the Freedom of Information Act.
You will also be able to demonstrate your skills in and experience of:
- Analysing information, correcting anomalies, identifying trends and presenting the results
- Delivering training (or be willing to develop this skill)
- Proactively identifying improvements in processes
It is desirable, but not essential, that you have experience of police IT systems such as; Crimes, FLINTS, ICIS, IMS, PNC and PND and have an awareness of NABIS.
Due to the nature of the role you will be required to undertake / currently hold Security check (SC) level vetting.
