About the role:

A unique opportunity has arisen to join NABIS as a Ballistics Expert on a permanent basis in Birmingham. As a NABIS Ballistics Expert you will provide expert ballistics knowledge in the delivery of products and services by using tool mark comparison systems, microscopy and IBIS technologies. You will undertake evidential test-firing of firearms for legal classification and ballistic comparison whilst preserving forensic evidence including DNA, fingerprints and fibres.

As the Ballistics Expert you will be required to collate, collect and interpret evidential firearms data and provide expert witness statements and give evidence in court. You will ensure that the maintenance of quality technical processes are in line with defined independent verified standards and that the development of firearms intelligence products is undertaken in conjunction with national intelligence analysts. You will be responsible for the efficient and effective use of IBIS technologies. Realising early investigative opportunities and maintaining a high quality firearms database including the examination and photography of firearms and ammunition for identifying marks and modifications.

You will have a supervisory responsibility for managing and training NABIS Ballistics Technicians and assisting in their development. You will ensure delivery of NABIS services in line with NABIS Service Level Agreements and national performance criteria and ensure that NABIS services are compliant with quality control standards whilst maintaining the highest levels of personal, business and scientific integrity. As the Ballistics Expert you will be responsible for the safety, certification and storage of all firearms and associated exhibits and documentation submitted to NABIS. 


The National Ballistics Intelligence Service (NABIS) provides fast time intelligence linked to the criminal use of firearms. NABIS is tasked with linking firearms incidents across the UK to help develop a national understanding of the use, supply, importation and manufacture of illegal firearms. NABIS forms part of UK policing as part of the NPCC’s portfolio, and works closely with the National Crime Agency, UK Border Force and Government Departments.

As part of your role you may be required to respond out of normal office hours and also work some weekends. The post holder will be expected to regularly travel across the UK therefore you must hold a valid UK Driving Licence. 

Due to the nature of the role you will be required to undertake / currently hold Security check (SC) level vetting. As a condition of being appointed to this post an individual will be required to provide a DNA and fingerprints. This is to assist in the elimination of identified samples from crime scenes they may attend.

About you:

As a Ballistics Expert you will have a good understanding of UK firearms legislation. You will be able to demonstrate that you can effectively meet demanding deadlines and performance targets whilst remaining flexible and responsive to changing operational circumstances. You will have good planning and organisation skills, as well as effective IT and written and verbal communication skills. 

You will also:

  • have a sound general forensic science knowledge including DNA, fingerprints, fibres, hairs and tool marks
  • be educated to degree level or equivalent with a forensic science discipline 
  • have successfully completed a NABIS Microscopy Competency assessment or be able successfully complete one prior to interview
  • have extensive knowledge of firearms history and manufacturing processes
  • experience of firearms range control and range procedures
  • have substantial work experience with a leading forensic organisation or an independent expert consultant 
  • have experience and training in use of IBIS technologies 
  • have experience of disassembly and reloading of ammunition and in re-charging pre-charge weapons
  • completed a recognised ‘Expert Witness Course’ in firearms and have court experience 
  • knowledge of police investigative procedures and intelligence led activity 
  • have supervised / trained staff and assisted in their assessment for further training
