Job Details
The School Appeals service arranges Independent Appeal Panels to deal with appeals from parents whose children are not offered a place at their preferred school.
The Role
We are looking for people to join our team of clerks who provide advice and support to Panels at their hearings. As clerk you will need to acquire a good working knowledge of the relevant legislation and Codes of Practice, and have excellent communication skills, together with the ability to relate to a wide variety of people.
Key Requirements
Hearings take place during the daytime throughout the year in different parts of Warwickshire. Clerks may also be offered work in the wider Midlands area. Our busiest time is between April and July, when appeals may be held over several days most weeks during term time. You will need to have:
- A good standard of education
- The ability to understand the legal framework and decision-making processes relevant to school appeals
- The ability to deal with sensitive issues in a tactful manner
- The ability to analyse potentially difficult situations quickly and act appropriately
- The ability to provide advice clearly and confidently to individuals and groups
- Excellent oral and written communication skills including the ability to take accurate notes and write clear decision letters
- Effective administrative and ICT skills
Training will be provided. Clerks will be home-based but will need to travel throughout Warwickshire, and from time to time in the wider Midlands area, to attend hearings. The role is on a sessional basis and the salary is pro-rata to hours worked.
