We require a member of staff to be responsible for day to day animal care on our working school farm. You will be responsible for overseeing the daily feeding, watering and health checking of our herds of pigs, sheep, ponies, goats, poultry and all of our small animals and for reporting any problems to the Head of Department.

You will also be required to work as a teaching assistant within our rural science lessons, to support the lead teacher in developing the practical skills and subject knowledge of our students. Each student in years 7 to 9 has around 25 hours a year on the farm, and students are able to choose land-based qualifications as part of our GCSE options process.

The vast majority of our animals are friendly and a pleasure to work with as they are used to being handled by our students. We are improving our facilities all the time and this is an exciting opportunity to become involved in a prominent yet still developing school farm project which is focussed on meeting the needs of our students as well as

contributing to rare breeds conservation.

Candidates must be able to demonstrate experience of working with at least one of the large animals which we keep and your ability to maintain basic animal welfare will be assessed as part of the interview process. You must be willing to work outside in all weathers though many of our animals are housed indoors during the winter.

This role is a 12 month maternity cover post in the first instance. It would be advantageous to have your own car as some of our fields are a short distance from your main place of work, however this is not essential to be appointed to the role. Experience of working with animals is more important than experience as a TA but you must be willing to do both

aspects of the role and have level 2 qualifications in English and Maths to support this.

Days of work:

Four weekdays and one day each weekend, all year round. Currently the weekdays required are Monday to Thursday but this may change when the school timetable changes in September. This will be discussed with candidates who are shortlisted for interview.

This post is covered by Part 7 of the Immigration Act (2016) and therefore the ability to speak fluent and spoken English is an essential requirement for this role.

Closing Date: 25/01/2019

Closing Time: 10.00

The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
  • An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
  • A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
  • A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
  • A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.

We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.

We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision.  We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.

In return, we offer you excellent terms and conditions, generous annual leave, a great pension scheme, well-being support, annual travel passes and discounts at a number of city centre establishments.
