Working for Birmingham City Council is more than just a job; it's about making life better for the one million plus people who live and work in the city.

Birmingham is a brilliantly diverse and creative city and everyone associated with Birmingham City Council is proud of its great history and unequalled contribution to the development of modern local government.

It is a fantastic place to work and you will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a team of practitioners to work on a developing area of work to improve safeguarding for children and young people who attend out of school settings. We are looking for highly motivated and reflective practitioners, who are passionate about safeguarding and supporting individuals and families in their choice of supplementary education.

Birmingham City Council is taking part in a national pilot to establish an Out of School Settings team to trial new approaches to improve safeguarding in out of school settings and to be at the frontier of developing new approaches to safeguarding and improving quality of provision in supplementary education. The pilot requires close engagement with local authority, schools and other statutory partners to help to provide a better understanding of the quality of safeguarding in out of school settings and to enable parents and carers to make informed choices about provision.

Birmingham City Council is looking to recruit the following posts with responsibility to improve safeguarding, to inform the development of a voluntary code of practice for service providers and to engage in research opportunities to demonstrate impact over time;

• Out of School Settings Project Co-ordinator x 1
• Out of School Settings Engagement Practitioners x 3
• Out of School Settings Programme Analyst x 1

The aim is to identify any safeguarding needs and identify appropriate interventions which help to improve awareness and application of safeguarding principles and to engage parents and carers in the design of a Parent Charter. Together with statutory and voluntary partners, the team will engage with the Department for Education and the University of Birmingham to pilot quality standards for a voluntary code of practice and to provide evidenced based research to improve applied practice.

You will work closely with partners in helping to deal effectively with all enquires and to work with schools in the city to improve the quality of safeguarding in settings.

You will also be required to use advanced professional knowledge, skill and experience to demonstrate a clear understanding of safeguarding in accordance with relevant legislation.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
