Job Details

An opportunity has arisen for a UTMC Technician role to provide day to day support in managing the traffic in and around Coventry’s road network and to provide technical support within the Traffic Signals and UTMC team.

You will be required to undertake a variety of maintenance and administrative duties relating to traffic signals, Intelligent Transport Systems and traffic engineering.

You will also be required on a daily basis covering the UTMC control desk to watch how traffic is moving on our road network and taking action to keep traffic moving by adjusting traffic signal timings and keeping key contacts informed when an unexpected incident causes delays on the road network. This service operates from 7am until 6pm, Monday to Friday and you will be required to work 37 hours per week with the need to work 7am to 3pm one week and 10am to 6pm the next.

On occasions there will also be a requirement to stay later than 6pm if there is a major incident on the road network that requires monitoring of traffic signals and manual management of the timings of the signals until traffic congestion is minimised.

You will need to be flexible and able to work evenings and weekends as required, to cover major events in the city including pop concerts, sporting events and other events such as Motofest and half marathons that involve increased traffic volumes or where some of the road network needs to be closed and traffic diverted elsewhere. Overtime or time off in lieu is available for this work.

Whilst it would be advantageous for you to have relevant experience in this area of work it is not absolutely essential. If you are the right candidate and you can demonstrate that you are keen to learn, are flexible in your approach to work, you work effectively as part of a team and you have a pro-active attitude we’d like to hear from you.

You will have plenty of opportunity to get involved in several projects as Coventry is embarking on an exciting period of growth and is getting prepared for City of Culture 2021.

If you have any questions about this role and would like an informal discussion please call Ben Gray the UTMC Manager on 024 7683 1337.
