 About the role:

Are you an experienced Front End App & API Developer?

Are you ready to make a real difference to citizens of the West Midlands?

Join our team and be at the heart of UK Policing’s most ambitious technology transformation - use your technical skills as a Big Data Developer to prevent crime, protect the public, and help those in need.

West Midlands Police is undertaking a period of unparalleled change and innovation; Technology is pivotal to both maintaining operational capabilities and building future success.

As a Senior Software Developer you will be working within the newly-created Cloud Services team. You will be responsible for leading and participating in the development of our ground breaking Big Data platform, particularly around the development of analytics web apps and supporting data APIs. The first of its kind in UK policing, West Midlands Police are working to pull together an unprecedented amount of data in to a Big Data solution which will not only provide historic and real-time reporting and intelligence, but the ability to identify trends and predict crime before it even happens! There will be an expectation for you to be a technical lead and bring extensive knowledge to the team, both in terms of existing technologies already in use as well as alternative methods which could bring about service improvement.

We'd really welcome your application if:

  • You have experience in developing Javascript framework based web apps and data APIs (ideally using AngularJS/Angular and Java Spring)

  • You are obsessive over user centric design and usability

  • You can add data visualisation elements to apps

  • You can design and develop data APIs, ideally you have done this on Big Data technology such as Solr and HBase

  • You have the ability to translate business requirements into software designs

  • You are inquisitive, enjoy getting involved, learning new tech and like adding value

  • You have acted as a mentor to more junior developers

  • You have good interpersonal and communication skills

Working within the IT & Digital Team at West Midlands Police can be rewarding; we offer the opportunity to work in a large organisation where people can develop their skills, knowledge and careers in an encouraging and flexible environment. Our benefits include:

  • 28 days annual leave (plus bank holidays) with the option to purchase additional days

  • Access to a Corporate Health Cash Plan and wellbeing website

  • Modern working environment in central Birmingham

  • Opportunity to save on travel costs through a Corporate Travel Scheme

The community we serve within the West Midlands is fantastically diverse. West Midlands Police is an equal opportunities employer, meaning we value diversity and shape our workforce to best match and reflect the people we serve.

You will be part of an already incredibly diverse and balanced team in terms of skill sets, gender, sexual orientation, age, disability status and ethnic background. The strong team ethos helps us deliver on our departmental mission statement in "Enabling WMP to serve our communities through innovative and empowering technology."

West Midlands Police is currently undertaking a long term review of staff pay and conditions. The grade, pay and other terms of employment are therefore subject to review and may change in the future.
