About the role:
The post is responsible for assisting the force armourer with the management and maintenance of all weapons and ammunition. They will deliver the maintenance program required for all weapons. The post holder will oversee and monitor the issue and return of all weapons and ammunition. The post holder will carry out the duties of the force armourer when absent. 
Main Duties:

  • To be responsible for the repair and maintenance of all Force weapons and associated equipment.
  • To ensure the safe storage and control of all firearms, ammunition, explosives and pyrotechnics used by the Operations Firearms Unit.
  • To maintain all records relating to Force weapons, ammunition and equipment of firearms nature, and ensure the safer disposal of such.
  • To receive, record, store and arrange secure disposal of all firearms, ammunition.

Qualifications
Knowledge & Experience 
Essential:

  • Knowledge of management, storage and issue of equipment or machinery.
  • Knowledge of repair and maintenance of equipment or machinery. 
  • Knowledge of maintaining records systems
  • Experience of maintaining computer based records
  • Work as part of a Team
  • I.T Literate 
  • Training experience
  • Ability to write business cases and potentially generate external income through training.

Desirable:

  • Experience of the safe storage and control of firearms, ammunition, explosives and pyrotechnics.
  • Experience of police / military armourer or gunsmith.
  • Experience of working with other forces, partners or outside agencies.
  • Attended and passed the following courses

  • Sig Manufacturer’s Armourers Initial
  • Glock Manufacturers Armourers Initial*
  • Remington 870 Manufacturers Armourers Initial*
  • H&K MP5 Manufacturers Armourers Initial
  • H&K G36 Manufacturers Armourers Initial* 
  • H&K L104A1 Launcher Manufacturers* 
  • Armourers Initial*
  • AI AW Armourers Initial* 
  • Benelli Manufacturers Armourers Initial*
  • Attended the Taser International Armourers course.*

Hours of Work and Flexibility:

  • The post holder will be contracted to work 36.5 hours per week but will need to be flexible to meet the demands of the post and may have to work outside normal core hours. 
  • The post holder will need to have the ability to travel to different locations across the region, as required
  • West Midlands Police are currently undertaking a long term review of staff pay and conditions. The grade, pay and other terms of employment are therefore subject to review and may change in the future.
