Role Summary:

As a Classroom Teacher - to deliver a broad, varied and well-balanced Early Years curriculum which nurtures and develops the potential of each child.

Key Tasks, Activities and Areas of Responsibility:

A) Planning, Teaching and Classroom Management

Plan objective led teaching and exercise good classroom management to achieve progression in pupils’ learning by:

Ø  Making effective use of assessment information when planning lessons.

Ø  Identifying clear teaching and learning objectives and specifying how they will be taught and assessed.

Ø  Establishing and maintaining a safe environment and purposeful working atmosphere which supports learning in which pupils feel secure and confident.

Ø  Planning opportunities to contribute to pupils’ literacy and numeracy, and to their personal, spiritual, moral, social and cultural development.

Ø  Identifying the needs of individuals and groups within classes, taking note of individual education plans.

Ø  Anticipating workload and planning ahead.

Ø  Setting tasks, including homework, which challenge and inspire pupils and ensure a high level of interest and motivation. 

Ø  Provide clear structures for lessons maintaining pace, motivation and challenge.

Ø  Setting clear targets building on prior attainment.

Ø  Maintaining a well-equipped and organised classroom with appropriate displays, resource areas and materials for the children’s use, within the classroom and outdoor learning areas.

Ø  Assisting in the development, continuity and progression in all areas of the school curriculum by planning with colleagues as part of a team within the Phase or with all school staff.

Ø  Delivering effective learning for all by using a variety of teaching methods.

Ø  Manage pupil behaviour and standards, encouraging a high standard of behaviour and mutual respect between all members of the school community.

Ø  Celebrate the achievements and creativity of all pupils.

Ø  Use Early Years Practitioners/Teaching Support Assistants’ time appropriately and effectively.

Ø  Critically evaluate teaching to improve effectiveness.
 

B)Monitoring, Assessment, Recording, Reporting

Use effective monitoring, assessment recording and reporting to achieve progression in pupils’ learning by:

Ø  Observing patterns of behaviour including absence and punctuality highlighting concerns to the Phase Leader.

Ø  Assessing how well learning objectives have been achieved and use them to improve specific aspects of teaching.

Ø  Assessing and recording pupils’ progress systematically and keeping records to check work is understood and completed, monitoring strengths and weaknesses, inform planning and recognise the level at which each pupil is achieving.

Ø  Recording children’s learning using an online learning journey.

Ø  Marking and monitoring pupils’ work and set targets for progress

Ø  Gaining an understanding of each child’s previous educational experience and having adequate knowledge of their home background including medical concerns, ethnic origin home language and religion. 

Ø  Preparing and presenting informative reports to parents/carers/carers.

C)Other Professional Requirements:

Ø  Operate at all times within the stated policies and practices of the school.

Ø  Reflect upon and evidence own performance, within the Appraisal cycle, reporting progress against targets. 

Ø  Take responsibility for own professional development and duties in relation to school policies and practices.

Ø  Ensure that parents/carers are made to feel important and welcome visitors. 

Ø  Be supportive of and sensitive to the needs of colleagues. 

Ø  Keep up to date with relevant initiatives and all curriculum developments to maintain good subject knowledge. 

Ø  Ensure that the school monitoring procedures are fully implemented. 

Ø  Liaise effectively with parents/carers, staff and governors as necessary and establish and maintain effective working relationships with all.

Ø  Endeavour to give every child the opportunity to reach their potential and meet high expectations.

Ø  Represent the school at internal and external meetings including those relating to Early Years as required. Ensure that positive networks are built and that colleagues receive feedback as appropriate.

Ø  Make positive contributions towards school initiatives including extra-curricular opportunities.

Ø  Foster a positive, lively and enthusiastic atmosphere for pupils and staff. 

Key Skills and Competencies:

Qualifications

Ø  Degree level qualification.

Ø  Postgraduate professional Qualification e.g. Postgraduate Certificate in Education.

Ø  Willingness to continue professional development.

Other Skills Required for Role

Ø  Specialism/experience of Early Years Development and Curriculum

Ø  Exercise flexibility in order to accommodate changes in work priorities.

Ø  Balance tasks and resources in the organisation of a wide range of activities.

Ø  Provide contingencies to deal with the unexpected.

Ø  Think clearly and logically in working through a problem making referrals as appropriate.

Ø  Monitor progress against key performance indicators.

Ø  Enthusiastic and positive attitude.

Ø  Awareness of the needs of children who have English as an additional language.

Ø  Prioritise and manage time effectively particularly in relation to balancing the demands made by administrative duties, teaching and acting as a resource for colleagues.

Ø  Qualification in/willingness to undertake qualification in Paediatric First Aid.

Ø  Utilise report-writing skills to accurately reflect a situation through positive language.

Accountability/Freedom to act

      Ø  Make routine decisions based upon guidelines and procedures laid down in the established framework.

Ø  Lead by example in standards of behaviour in the work environment.

Ø  Make decisions based upon analysis, understanding and interpretation of relevant data and information.  

Ø  Make judgements with regard to when it is appropriate to liaise with others including external agencies.

General Comments

Ø  The Classroom Teacher teaches classes of approximately 30 children.

Ø  To be successful in this role they must readily adapt to constantly changing curriculum, modifying lesson preparation and delivery accordingly.

Ø  They operate strictly in accordance with the school policies and procedures and have limited scope for decision making outside of these frameworks.
