Woodlands is a Local Authority school providing education for students with significant SEMH needs across Key stages 2 – 4. The school comprises of three settings – two primary (KS2) - one in Oswestry and one in Bishops Castle, and a secondary school based in Wem.

This is a career enhancing opportunity for a visionary and experienced school leader who will be looking for an opportunity to transform our school and play a pivotal role in working with the Headteacher and key stakeholders as we shape the future of our school together.

The post holder will lead on teaching and learning and be the SENCo for the school. This position will commence from September 2019. The Deputy Headteacher will take a strategic lead in the development of policy, procedure and practice in line with the Children and Families Act and the SEN code of practice working closely with staff, students, parents and governors to ensure positive outcomes for all of our young people.

The successful candidate will be pivotal in shaping our ethos and values, embedding attachment friendly practices and therapeutic approaches across all three settings. They will work with staff to ensure practice across the school is tailored to maximise rates of student progress so that all of our young people are provided with the opportunity to fulfil their potential, preparing them for successful adulthood.

As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, you should already have leadership experience - ideally within a specialist provision, and be ready to take on the next challenging stage of your career. The successful candidate will have the energy, charisma, personality and philosophy to drive standards across the school, work in collaboration with the local authority, and develop close and genuine relationships with staff, students, parents and our key stakeholders. 

The successful candidate will carry some teaching responsibility and will lead on whole school initiatives. With a proven track record in supporting vulnerable learners, you will demonstrate your commitment to whole school improvement and be able to evidence the impact of your work.

We are looking for applicants who can demonstrate:

  • Comprehensive knowledge and experience of current SEND, inclusion, ACE and attachment initiatives and pedagogy
  • A sound knowledge of the statutory framework for SEND and education.
  • Incredibly high expectations of themselves and others
  • An aptitude to lead, motivate and inspire others with a proven track record in managing change
  • Highly skilled in understanding and managing challenging behaviour that results from complex SEMH needs.
  • Successful performance management, quality assurance processes, monitoring and appraisal of others 
  • An innovative practice and a desire for career progression 
  • Successful experience in school improvement planning and the school self-evaluation process
  • Resilience and a solution- focused work ethic and a willingness to go the extra mile
