Security Services provide a range of security related services that include security and reception services, a building opening and closing/securing service, a 24 hour response to alarm activations, conference room set up services for functions and events and the issuing of identity passes. Our aim is to provide a professional and efficient security and portering service based on sound technical and operational standards; to ensure the safety and security of council staff and visitors.

The Customer Support Officer role is the 'face' of the Council, you will be responsible for delivering a “front of house, meet and greet” customer service at the entrance to BCC buildings and maintaining a secure professional environment for employees, building users, contractors and members of the public. You are expected to act as ambassadors of the City Council and it is essential that you display excellent customer service skills at all times to ensure everyone working at or visiting our buildings is dealt with sensitively, efficiently, respectfully and courteously.

It is essential that you provide a professional, stringent security presence to ensure that unauthorised people cannot enter the buildings; this requires the Customer Support Officer to pro-actively check all staff security passes (where appropriate) and maintain a vigilant presence to ensure a secure environment is provided at all times for the occupants of the building.

• A 36.50 hour working week is in operation, generally working on a rotating shift system which includes weekdays, weekends and Bank Holidays. The hours are subject to adjustment as may be necessary having regard to the requirements of the service, the specific nature of the duties attaching to the post and the directions of the City Council. It may be required for the post holder to work outside of office hours i.e. evenings, weekends or to change work locations during the course of the day subject to the demands of the business.

• The conditions of employment provide for post holders to be transferred to other similar posts or locations within the Division commensurate with job description, ability and experience.

• All staff will be required to present themselves for work duties in the required uniforms provided, in a “smart and professional manner”.

For any informal enquiries please contact Paul Ellis, 0121 303 3822

“Right to work in the UK documentation will be fully checked for all applicants. All non UK and non EU applicants are required to apply for a Certificate of Sponsorship from Birmingham City Council and must be approved by the UK Border Agency (UKBA) before any employment offer can be confirmed.”

The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
  • An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
  • A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
  • A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
  • A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.

We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.

We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision.  We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.

In return, we offer you excellent terms and conditions, generous annual leave, a great pension scheme, well-being support, annual travel passes and discounts at a number of city centre establishments.
