Based on the edge of Walsall town centre there are excellent links to the local and wider community. The Site Support Officer will be responsible in supporting the Head of Operations to ensure that the school is a suitable environment for staff to work and students to learn.

Context of The Ladder Alternative Provision Free School

The Ladder School is a brand new school for Walsall, to cater for the needs of young people within the local community to offer something different educationally. The Ladder School will cater for young people at risk of exclusion from mainstream provision, primarily because of behavioural difficulties in terms of their needs being met in a mainstream setting.

The Ladder School is an free school that is part of the Mercian Trust and in turn close links to the Vine Trust will become the newest member to a diverse family of schools. Students who attend the Ladder School will be dual rolled with their ‘home’ school, to offer a wraparound alternative education provision to ensure they can succeed and to enable students to make a positive contribution to their families, the local community and wider society.

The uniqueness of The Ladder School, is embodied in a tailored 3-year KS4 programme of GCSE subjects and practical vocational courses followed by an innovative post-16 offer enhanced with significant employer involvement (Ladder Foundation). In order to ensure positive student destinations (post - 16 and post - 18) It is envisaged around 50% of students will reintegrate directly into General Further Education or a traineeship/apprenticeship at 16 with 50% of students continuing into the school’s sixth form.  Students in the school’s sixth form will follow bespoke study programmes that include;

  • vocational courses from the school’s specialist pathways
  • GCSE English and maths resist if required
  • a comprehensive pastoral and personal development element and
  • employer involvement including in careers/IAG, work-readiness and work experience placements.

The Ladder School is based on George Street, just outside of Walsall town centre, near ASDA.

We expect to partner with the LA in the new joint wave of Special and AP free schools 2018/19 to see additional Ladder School’s established to serve me needs of students in the community.
