Job Details

Malvern Hills District Council and Wychavon District Council are proactive and successful authorities that have recently combined their Planning Services team. Employed by Malvern Hills District Council, this role will be based primarily in Wychavon, situated in accessible, attractive countryside within South Worcestershire.

We are currently looking for a chartered Town Planner in the role of Area Planning Officer. This role will manage one of the Development Management area teams in Wychavon dealing with a wide variety of application types for an authority that has a robust five year land supply.

Wychavon district boasts a wide range of planning influences such as AONB, Green Belt, conservation areas and listed buildings in both rural and urban settings resulting in an opportunity for a varied caseload of planning applications.



Area Planning Officer

£36,876 - £40,760 per annum 

You will lead and manage a team of planning professionals dealing with the planning workload in one of the Council’s four Area Development Management Teams. You will deal with a wide range of complex and major planning applications and informal enquiries and will prepare reports and recommendations on applications. You will be experienced in presenting applications to Planning Committee and will be expected to work closely with the public, members of the Council, developers and their representatives.  You will also deal with appeals and act, where appropriate, as the Council’s witness at Public Inquiries. 

Part time applications are welcomed for this position with the option to work 30 hours per week: 9am – 3pm , Monday to Friday.

Based at Pershore with a requirement to occasionally cover Malvern Hills as part of a shared service arrangement.

We need someone with excellent communication skills, full membership of the RTPI, together with extensive experience in Development Management, ideally gained in a local authority.

You will ideally have experience of managing a team /individuals but this is a role that could be your first step on the management ladder. You will have a good knowledge of the processes involved in planning applications and appeals and will have experience of representing the local planning authority on Section 78 appeals. The ability to manage and prioritise workloads and make appropriate professional decisions is essential.

There will be a requirement to travel within the district with flexibility to attend evening meetings on occasion.
