About the role:

 

A vacancy has become available for a Police Dog Instructor assigned to our highly successful Puppy Development & Breeding Programme.  Within this role you will work alongside the Breed Scheme Manager in order to breed & develop our Police Dogs of the future and we are looking for a highly motivated individual who is passionate about dog training to join our team.

 

Within this role you will be responsible for the following:-

  • To assist with the development & training of young dogs within the Puppy Development Programme.
  • To be assist with dog breeding & to be on call to assist with the whelping of puppies
  • To develop and train young dogs daily that are housed at Dog Training Centre
  • To undertake formal assessments of young dogs
  • To assist in the recruitment process & management of volunteers
  • To support all volunteers within the Dog Section by providing training & assistance, to help volunteers develop young dogs within the Puppy Development Programme.
  • To deliver group & 1-2-1 training sessions for volunteers
  • To deliver instruction in Police Dog Training & Handler development, in line with NPCC Police Dog Manual of Guidance
  • To undertake health and safety risk assessments and administer first aid if required.
  • To undertake general clerical duties and maintain computer records.
  • To complete training records, kennel club registrations, breeding documentation, volunteer contracts, dog contracts and health screening requirements
  • To complete tasks be allocated by the Chief Instructor

NPCC Certified Police Dog Instructor (Once NPCC Qualification achieved)

  • To deliver Police Dog training in General Purpose and Specialist fields
  • To develop handling skills and to assist in the selection of suitable staff
  • To facilitate the positive and effective development of Police Dogs
  • To assess Dog Section Teams with regards to enquiries by PSD and Legal Services.
  • To liaise and negotiate the use of suitable venues for Police Dog Training.
  • To manage students and learning related challenges

Knowledge & Experience (including qualifications)

  Essential

  • To possess Teaching Qualification at a minimum of Level 3
  • To possess a Degree (or equivalent) in an animal/canine related subject
  • To have an understanding of breeding protocols and blood lines
  • To have experience of delivering dog training to groups & individuals
  • To possess basic IT skills (Microsoft Office - Word/Excel/Powerpoint/Outlook)
  • Full UK Driving licence

Desirable

  • To possess a First Aid Qualification
  • To possess a Risk Assessment Qualification
  • To possess an Assessors Qualification
  • To have gained an NPCC GP or specialist instructors qualification
  • To have experience of whelping

  • To be able to work with minimal supervision & use own initiative
  • To be able to evidence a good level of management ability

  • To demonstrate networking & relationship building skills
