Job Details

  1. Main Purpose of the Job:
    • Pro-active management and development of catering staff and resources. Primarily based at Trentham Academy, but may need to work on other Trust sites if/when appropriate.
  1. Position in the Organisation:
    • Catering Manager responsible for Trentham Academy Kitchen.
  1. Duties & Key Responsibilities (Equate to 100%):

Service Delivery

  • Delivery of high standards of service.
  • Skilled preparation and cooking activities, including special dietary meals.
  • Provision of a high quality, choice and variety product range to achieve maximum sales.
  • Monitoring and evaluation of performance.
  • Maintenance and development of systems to ensure the smooth running of the catering service.
  • Review of suppliers to ensure the Academy is provided with a high quality of food for good value. 
  • Ordering and maintaining stock levels.

Service Promotion

  • Maximizing sales by promoting and marketing the service.
  • To be involved in activities relating to Promotion of the Service and Emergency Feeding.
  • Creating appealing menus and good food choices.
  • Achieving standards and awards.

Service Development

  • Monitoring and assessing the effectiveness of service delivery.
  • Monitoring and evaluating sales, working practices to improve performance and the service provided.
  • Contribution to, and implementation of, a development plan for the establishment.

Financial Support

  • Management of costs to achieve trading surplus.
  • Maintenance of records and controls.
  • Responsibility for the cost-effective ordering and receipts.
  • Liaison with Academy finance team and admissions team as to students entitled to Free School Meals (FSM) and links to Parent Pay.

Personnel Support

  • Responsibility for supervision, motivation, training, discipline, welfare and development of staff.
  • Recruitment, selection and appointment of casual staff.
  • Identifying and reviewing job related development needs at individual and team level.
  • Planning, prioritising and implementing development plans for individuals and the team – ensuring qualifications and standards are met and adhered to.
  • Maintaining discipline and standards in accordance with CLT employment and Industrial Relations policies and procedures.
  • Responsibility for the progression of staff through the staff development process.

Support for Staff and Student Care

  • Maintaining effective relationships with staff and students.
  • Anticipating the need and seeking views of staff and students.
  • Manage the provision of nutritionally balanced school meals taking into account national initiatives and best practice.
  • Where appropriate provide catering needs of pupils and staff participating in school visits.

Health, Safety and Hygiene

  • Control of Health and Safety and Hygiene.
  • Keep abreast of changes to Health and Safety and food Hygiene requirements and implement appropriate changes.
  • Undertake the necessary food checks and record keeping required for environmental health purposes.
  • Ensure the effective cleaning of the kitchen and surrounding areas – surfaces, furniture and equipment.
  • Overseeing external contractors to ensure compliance with regard to cleaning of cooker hood and high level cleaning.

Risk Management

  • Ensuring a safe and healthy working environment for all staff.
  • Ensuring compliance of:
  • Statutory requirements in respect of Employment, Finance, Hygiene, Health & Safety.
  • CLT Policy, procedures, standing order and regulations.
  • CLT Codes of Practice, policies and procedures concerning food, hygiene, health & safety, risk assessment and hazard analysis
  • Implementation and maintenance of induction, refresher and awareness training for all staff.
  • Reporting of any defects to premises or breakdowns to equipment requiring replacement or repair to the relevant manager.
