About the role:


A position has become available on the West Midlands Police review team based at Harborne Police station Birmingham (B17 9LL).  The review team consists of 10 investigators both serving experienced detectives and experienced police staff review officers, who are supported and report directly to the Detective Sergeant on the team and work closely with the Detective Inspector.


As a valued member of the Force Review Team, you will research and prepare documentation relating to reviews of historical and current major crime investigations.


Requirements for the role:

  • You will be expected to Identify forensic and investigative opportunities within cold case reports to progress the case and work closely with internal partners including Intelligence, Scientists and Investigative functions to ascertain details of cold case investigations and compile detailed reports for submission to Crown Prosecution Service (CPS)
  • You must have the personable skills to conduct peer to peer interviews with colleagues of all ranks detailing their involvement within investigations and identify good or weak practices.
  • Your work will be represented in the form of a high quality document that will provide briefings for officers identified from investigative functions to further progress investigations. 
  • You may conduct any other reviews as required including reviews of long term and inactive missing persons investigations
  • You will act as a representative of West Midlands Police on inter-agency forums, external bodies which may involve travel in the region. This will develop inter-agency working and co-operation.
  • You should acquire and maintain a thorough knowledge of all legislative requirements.
  • You will ensure procedures and practices comply with West Midlands Police equal opportunities policies, health and safety legislation and any other legislative requirements
  • External candidates must be able to demonstrate their experience in complex and major investigations, be conversant with the criminal justice system and with the relevant legislation.

Knowledge & Experience 

Essential:

  • Previous experience of producing clear, concise and accurate reports
  • Experience of working in an environment dealing with the public
  • Working knowledge of confidentiality and data protection issues
  • Be willing to successfully undertake any training requirements in respect of the role, to include:
    • ICIDP
    • National Review Officers Course
    • West Midlands Police IT Systems training
    • Any other training as the role requires
    • Previous police experience of serious and complex crime investigations
    • Previous experience in criminal law and criminal justice system 
    • Experience of working effectively in a team

Desirable:
 

  • Experience of dealing with conflict
  • Be qualified to ICIDP level or equivalent experience
  • Previous experience of reviewing major crime investigations
  • Previous police experience of homicide investigations
  • Experience of working in a multi-agency environment, working with partner agencies
  • Working knowledge of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act

Skills:

Essential:
 

  • Competent IT skills
  • Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
  • Self-motivation, self-management and decision making skills
  • Flexible approach to problem solving

Desirable:
 

  • Ability to assimilate, interpret and review a variety of information and produce reports outlining findings/recommendations
  • Demonstrable presentation skills


Hours of Work and Flexibility:
 

  • Hours of working will be Monday – Friday between 8am and 4pm, although post holder may be required to work outside these hours from time to time for which they would be compensated accordingly, taking into account individual circumstances
  • May be required to work outside normal working hours on occasions, including Bank Holidays and weekends. May be required to attend work at short notice, again taking into account individual circumstances
  • Requirement to hold a full UK driving license and pass the WMP driving test to drive unmarked Police vehicles if required
  • This role may require the post holder to perform duties on a force wide basis
  • Requirement to travel out of the force area, where necessary, to progress investigations.
