Salary G9 £32,552 - £37,475

We are looking for someone with a can-do attitude to join our Development Management team.  This is an exciting time for Walsall as we adopted our Site Allocations Document and Town Centre Area Action Plan at the beginning of the year and we are now preparing our Town Centre Master Plan.  In addition to commercial development work, we can also offer a varied case load of planning projects including complex residential proposals, major industrial schemes and everything in between. We also have rural sites in the Green Belt to offer further variety to the role.  

To be able to take on this post, you will need to be able to demonstrate significant development management experience but more importantly, a desire to learn more and developing your career and as Walsall is among the higher performing authorities in terms of decision making there are opportunities here to support your career development.

As you will be dealing with Councillors, members of the public and planning agents on a daily basis, excellent communication and customer service skills are required.  This post is covered by the Government’s Code of Practice on the English Language Fluency Duty for public sector workers.

You will need to be able to work effectively under pressure, observe deadlines and work both independently and as part of a team. Your duties will require you to: 

  • Provide pre-application advice
  • Negotiate with applicants and their agents to secure sustainable development schemes
  • Prepare accurate delegated and committee reports on applications
  • Deal with S106 agreements
  • Prepare and present the Council’s case at appeals

In addition to be being able to evidence your skills and experience of dealing with a range of planning applications, you will also need to show how you can manage your own workload in a timely manner.  You will also need to show excellent IT skills especially the use of MS Office and have a full driving licence.
