Temporary Vacancy – Breathing Apparatus Maintenance (BAM) Manager

Emergency Response Team (ERT)

A temporary vacancy exists for the position of BA Maintenance Manager.

Salary: Grade 8 (£31,371 to £33,799), or Watch Manager (if applicable – see additional info)

Hours: 37 hours per week (Flexible Working Scheme in operation)

            42 hours for operational WM's

About the role:

This is a lead role in the department that provides and manages effective risk critical operational equipment including Breathing Apparatus (BA). 

The successful applicant will be expected to lead by example, and to be able to evidence their commitment to development, excellence, diversity, team work, and their own personal development.

The successful applicant will need to be a dynamic individual committed to innovation and transformation, and will be expected to be able to deliver on a range of projects. They may be required to travel outside of the County in order to fulfil the role, with occasional overnight stays.

Specific Responsibilities include:

  •  Line Management of Breathing Apparatus Technicians & ensuring their required competencies are up to date.
  •  Production and review of BAM responsible documents.
  • Completion of health and safety technical investigations for BA malfunctions, Safety Events, and Cause for Concerns.
  • BAM budget management.
  • Carrying out fair and effective procurement processes with the support of the Service procurement lead.
  • Liaise with suppliers for advice and guidance in order to inform department actions and produce Ops Flashes for the Service.
  • Assist with the implementation of National Operational Guidance and the review of Service policy and guidance.
  • Provide resilience within BAM where necessary, i.e. maintain technician specific training.
  •  Maintain H&S requirements in BAM i.e. HS1 & specific risk assessments.
  • Ensure periodic maintenance and testing programmes for BAM equipment take place Service-wide.
  • Attend internal and external meetings/forums/User Groups as required.
  • Carry out BAM awareness presentation as part of the Supervisory Management modules.
  • Act upon manufacturers recommendations for equipment updates and upgrades, liaising with H&S and FBU where necessary.
  • Produce Response Directorate papers when required.

Essential Criteria:

Knowledge and Experience:
• Experience of project management
• Knowledge of operational equipment and fire appliances
• Experience of line management

Skills, ability and personal qualities:
• Highly effective communication and interpersonal skills
• Resilient & problem-solver
• Excellent IT skills
• Prepared to undertake training for the role, and to develop self as required
• Full current driving licence

Desirable Criteria:
• A wide and varied knowledge of the practical use of operational equipment
• H&S knowledge & experience

This vacancy is open to internal and external applicants.

Operational (Grey Book) applicants should be either competent Wholetime CM’s, or Wholetime WM’s wishing to transfer. (Please note that a CM will be remunerated at WM rate of pay, but will be required to satisfy a WM promotion process in order to be substantiated in rank)
