VACANCY FOR 2 PARTNERSHIP GOVERNORS

The Governing Board

Like all schools Alder Coppice Primary School has a Governing Board made up of governors from different backgrounds and interests. Governors do not run the School on a day-to- day basis - that is the Headteacher’s job. They play four very important roles in the life of Alder Coppice:

  1. Strategic Direction

Working on behalf of the local community, they set the broad direction of the School. This includes the ethos of the School, that is to say its values and aims which underlie everything which the School does. Governors approve the School’s budget and the curriculum each year, and of vital importance to a successful School they appoint the Senior Leadership Team.

  1. Critical Friend

The governors get to know the School well in various ways, and are able to give it their support as a ‘friend’. But they are also in a good position to have an honest ‘critical’ view of the School and be able to give constructive comments where it is needed.

  1. Accountability

All Governors are accountable to the people who appoint them - and ultimately to parents and to the public. The Headteacher in turn is accountable to the governors for how he runs and manages the School.

  1. Raising Attainment

The main role of any school is to enable the pupils to enjoy learning and to achieve their potential, whether that is intellectual, social, sporting or whatever. So governors must ensure that there are policies in place to raise the attainment of pupils each year and monitor those policies to see that they are being followed effectively.

We currently have 2 vacancies for Partnership Governors.

Partnership governors are found only at foundation and foundation special schools which do not have a foundation of trustees.

These are former county grant-maintained and grant-maintained special schools. Partnership governors must be members of the community served by the school who are committed to the good government and success of the School.

The Governing Board is responsible for seeking nominations for partnership governors, and for appointing them. Parents of pupils currently at the School, people employed to work at the School, or elected members or local authority employees connected with education cannot be appointed as partnership governors.

Individuals are only eligible to be nominated as a partnership governor if the person nominating them believes that they have the skills needed to contribute to the effective governance and success of the School.

Individuals can self-nominate or be nominated by someone else.

We are particularly looking for Partnership governors who can add expertise to the existing team e.g. with knowledge and/or experience in business, finance, personnel, law, safeguarding, health and safety.

Reasons to Volunteer

Being a school governor means being interested in getting the best education for the pupils at the School. Governors can become involved in a range of school matters, which can include recruitment, finance and curriculum.

They also provide a strong link between the School and the local community, and an independent view to support the School on long term development and improvement.

Our Governing Board meet on a regular basis, with meetings currently scheduled during the day with little or few evening commitments.

There are a range of training opportunities available to help governors undertake their duties and develop their understanding of the key areas of school management.

For further details or to make a nomination please contact Mrs S Linney, Headteacher’s PA, in the first instance slinney@alder.dudley.sch.uk by Friday 13 September 2019.
