About the role:

Traffic Investigation Unit (TIU) is part of the Criminal Justice Services department and is responsible for:

  • Road Traffic Collision administration and Investigation
  • Central Ticket Office 


The TIU is based at WMP Headquarters, Lloyd House, Birmingham and the Road Traffic Collision team are responsible for the management and investigation of all road traffic collisions (damage only to serious injury) as well as allegations of driving standard offences.

All TIU staff will be responsible for maintaining high quality levels of service to members of the public and stakeholders.

The post is based at Lloyd House, Birmingham. Working hours are Monday to Friday 36.5 hours per week.

Reporting to the TIU Sergeant, the role will include:

  • Prompt review of all RTC enquires allocated to them and prioritise the enquiries directed to be completed, in line with the Road Traffic Collision Investigation Policy.
  • Taking evidential witnesses statements both within a police station and at external locations
  • Carrying out interviews (either by way of tape recording or contemporaneous notes) of potential offenders
  • Carrying out investigations as requested by TIU Sergeant and File Managers including visiting scenes, ensuring the securing of evidence such as CCTV in a timely manner and pursuing all proportionate lines of enquiry in accordance with the RTC Policy.
  • Compile and submit case papers observing the highest professional standards and ensuring evidential integrity, within set time guidelines, making clear recommendations as to the appropriate method of disposal.
  • Adhere to the force contact counts policy and keep all parties updated with the progress of the investigation in line with the RTC Investigation Policy.
  • Take personal responsibility to keep updated with policy and legislation changes and to actively develop the role of the TIU PSI.
  • Be flexible and adaptable with regard to the needs of the department.
  • Perform any other duties commensurate with the needs of the department.

Essential Skills:

 

  • Must have an aptitude for investigative work with particular emphasis on road traffic collisions.
  • Able to analyse and evaluate information and make a reasoned decision as to how to progress investigations.
  • Able to carry out interviews and take statements from members of the public and potential suspects.
  • Display sound decision making skills and the ability to work with minimal supervision.
  • An ability to handle sensitive and confidential information, whilst demonstrating the utmost integrity and professionalism.
  • To display a good level of interpersonal skills and the ability to work in a team environment.
  • A sound knowledge and understanding the Road Traffic Act and the force RTA policy.

Desirable Requirements:

  • Authorised to drive police vehicles
  • Ability to use force IT systems such as PNC, FLINTS, EFB.
