Job Details

The West Midlands Combined Authority (WMCA) is a strategic authority working with partners to deliver a stronger West Midlands, with a focus on skills, innovation, transport, economic development and regeneration. Individual Councils and Local Enterprise Partnerships will still deliver services and retain their identity but on the big decisions we will have the resources to work together.

This is an exciting time for the West Midlands - the Commonwealth Games will be here in 2022, the arrival of HS2 will help make us a world class business location and a new £350m housing deal aims to deliver 215,000 new homes by 2031.

Against a backdrop of a uniquely challenging and evolving environment, we are looking for the right people to ensure we can meet the demands of delivering an ambitious agenda that aims to build a healthier, happier, better connected and more prosperous West Midlands.  This role will truly have an impact on the whole of our region.

About Swift

The Swift solution provides public transport ticketing options, using smartcards, on all buses, trains and trams across the West Midlands. One in three public transport journeys are made with Swift each year and this is increasing continually. Swift has its current and future customers’ requirements at its heart. Looking forward the team are always looking for innovative ways to increase even further the simplicity of obtaining and using Swift. The Swift team have worked with worldwide partners, including Google, in a UK first, to embed Swift tickets within Google Pay so customers do not need a card at all. Increasingly customers are looking for a seamless transport solution and Swift is already piloting acceptance for parking, bike hire, taxis and even leisure centres. These solutions will be rolled out even further in the future and will help ensure that public transport is increasingly seen as the optimum customer choice.

About the Role

We have an exciting opportunity for a talented, dynamic, self-driven Data Analyst to join our team.  They will be instrumental in delivering business intelligence reporting and to undertake robust and creative data analysis to derive relevant insight to help define and drive forward solutions as well as to help implement and deliver various Concessionary Travel Schemes.

The successful applicant will analyse a vast array of data sources covering over half a million customers undertaking more than 300m public transport journeys per year to support the strategy for Swift and the decision making process for things such as new product design, optimising the customer experience, marketing approaches, transport operator reimbursement, product pricing and fraud detection.

Another key part of the role is to understand the legislative background to the English National Concessionary Travel pass scheme and to interpret and use the tools and definitions, as defined by the Department for Transport, to establish and use local fares data to calculate the operator payments for acceptance of these cards.  These payments exceed £55m per annum.

The ideal candidate will be an analytical problem solver with experience of data analysis, mining and reporting, using analysis tools including Microsoft Excel and extracting data sets from numerous systems in order to produce combined results. The candidate will be educated to degree level or equivalent and expected to present their analysis to a wide ranging audience therefore excellent presentation and communication skills will be required.

This is an exciting opportunity within the Swift team which will provide the successful candidate with the opportunity of working within a multifaceted environment which crosses over technology, data analytics and economics.  The successful candidate will be offered on the job learning as well as opportunities for more formal training.

The landscape and importance of transport in the region is changing rapidly and this role offers a great opportunity to play a key part in this vital area.

In return for your hard work and commitment, we will reward you with a range of competitive and attractive benefits.

We are committed to developing an organisation that is representative of the diverse communities that we serve and welcome applications from all sections of the community.  The following groups are currently under-represented: young people, Black, Asian and ethnic minority groups and women at senior levels.

Wherever possible we will offer flexible working options which assist work-life balance and support service delivery for the customer
