Apprentice GIS Mapping Technician

You will provide general technical support to a busy Environmental Services team based at Moat Lane Depot in Solihull. The role will include assistance with the development, monitoring and maintenance of highway records/Solihull Community Housing/Parks & Open Spaces and associated asset management systems. Capturing information on highway/Solihull Community Housing/POS assets such as highway extent, new and maintenance schemes, structures, cycle routes, traffic regulation orders, using a range of tools including GPS. Digitise paper based maps and records and develop new GIS datasets. Interpret, analyse using GIS to identify patterns to support and assist project delivery and reporting. Investigate methods of data capture for vehicle, pedestrian and cycle usage within GIS datasets.
As part of the role you will undertake a Level 3 qualification as a Geospatial Survey Technician .This is achieved through a two year contract with a day release programme in which you attend Dudley College one day a week and the other four days are spent in the office or onsite working alongside our experienced professionals. Your studies and on-the-job experience will lead you to achieve Engineering Technician status and the right to apply to become an Associate member of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors or an Associate Member of the Chartered Institution of Civil Engineering Surveyors and an exciting career in Civil Engineering.
You will need to have the desire to learn a multitude of skills within a busy and sometimes pressurised environment and be fully committed to training for the Level 3 Apprenticeship and completion within the designated time scale.
You need a minimum of five GCSEs at Grade A*-C (4-9) including Mathematics at Grade B (5-9) English Language and Science or an equivalent qualification such as a BTEC Level 2 Diploma in Construction or Engineering at Merit or Distinction Level. Experience of GIS/AutoCAD is desirable but not essential.
