Job Details
We have an opportunity for an Inspections/Visiting Officer to join our Revenues, Benefits and Customer Contacts team. This service incorporates the:
- billing and collection of Council Tax, Non Domestic Rates and Sundry Debts,
- assessment and award of Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims,
- prevention and detection of fraudulent Housing Benefit and Council Tax Reduction claims,
- front line service delivery to customers via the Council's switchboard, and face to face at the Customer Service Centres in Burton upon Trent and Uttoxeter.
As Inspections/Visiting Officer you will provide support to our Revenues Team Leader, by conducting property inspections in a timely manner, ensuring the Council’s tax bases are maximised and maintained effectively. As a core member of our Revenues Team, you will be part of our front line customer service delivery, dealing with property owners, occupiers, builders, to name but a few. You may also be required to attend Valuation Tribunals where tax payers dispute decisions made following inspections. If you enjoy working to targets and tight deadlines then this is the job for you. You will need excellent negotiation skills and be confident to use persuasive language during the chase and follow up of property changes.
The successful candidate should have the ability to:
- work alone with limited supervision whilst achieving the required targeted inspections;
- travel to various locations within the Borough to work, on occasions at short notice;
- schedule inspections on a daily/weekly/monthly basis.
You should also have knowledge of legislation and procedures surrounding the maintenance of the Council Tax and Non Domestic Rates tax bases as well as a minimum of 5 GCSE passes or equivalent, including English Language & Maths.
You should have excellent negotiation and communication skills and be confident in pursuing tax payers for information about their properties.
You must be IT literate and proficient in the use of Microsoft Office Suite.
You must also have the ability to adapt readily to change and work effectively in a variety of situations as well as being able to work in a demanding environment requiring customer interactions that may be challenging.
