Job Details

At Warwickshire County Council, we are now commencing our undergraduate student recruitment campaign seeking candidates for new year-out placements in Bridge Maintenance and Highway Design Teams.

We appreciate that the students who are potentially interested in these placements are all under considerable pressure with their studies and so we have kept our application process very simple. We require only a brief covering letter and a CV, which can be emailed directly to myself. Shortly after that I shall contact applicants to arrange a 30 minute interview. On the day of the interview, applicants will also receive a tour of our engineering department, guided by one of our current trainees and get to speak to engineers from the various teams around the Civil Engineering Department about the projects they are working on.

I would be very grateful if these opportunities could be circulated to second and third year students. If any of the students would like to find out more about these positions, they are welcome to contact me. My contact details are provided below.

The deadline for Applications is Friday 13th December 2019, interviews will take place during December 2019 and January 2020.

Engineering Opportunities at Warwickshire County Council

Design Services, Warwickshire County Council are a civil engineering business unit within the Local Authority that provide a design consultancy service to both the private and public sector. The core business is comprised of the design and construction of highways and highway structures, but we also manage the maintenance of County's highway structure assets and operate a building and structural design service.

This year we are aiming to appoint new undergraduate student placements in the Bridge Maintenance and Highway Design Teams.

The Bridge Maintenance Section manages the County Council’s highway structures, inspecting and assessing the Council’s stock of bridges and highway related retaining walls, drainage structures and vehicle restraint systems.  The Section is also responsible for the design and construction of structural refurbishments, repairs and replacements.

The Highway Design Section is primarily involved with the delivery of projects ranging from £0.3M to £40.0M in value.  The majority of these projects are new junctions and accesses for proposed major developments.  Other projects include new link roads, junction improvements, cycle schemes, traffic safety schemes and town centre regeneration schemes.  Substantial major projects are on the horizon following recent Government announcements and major development in the county.

Typically the day-to-day work for the successful candidates can involve any stage of a construction project including feasibility studies, planning consent, detailed design, contract document preparation, procurement, site supervision and later asset management and maintenance.

Skills and Experience

As a new Graduate Engineer, it is not necessary for you to have practical experience of working on Civil Engineering projects but candidates who have this background will find it to their advantage. Ideally you will be completing an ICE accredited BEng or MEng course (BSc and MSc courses may also be applicable) and will have studied modules applicable to the type of work undertaken by Warwickshire County Council.
