James Brindley is a stand-alone Academy based in a wide variety of locations across the City of Birmingham. In the course of a school year we educate over 3,000 young people for periods ranging from a few days in hospital to several years in one of our teaching centres. The majority of our young people have complex medical needs and many have

been out of education for a significant period of time prior to joining the Academy. We offer a full-time curriculum to young people from EYFS to KS5 and our aim is always to enable them to ‘close the gap’ and to make outstanding progress during the time they are with us.

We are looking for a qualified teacher of English at our KS3 Centre, which has young people from Year 7 to 9. Our centre offers a safe and nurturing provision where staff work together with parents/carers and other professionals to support young people who have had difficulty accessing their mainstream academy due to Social, Emotional and Mental

Health needs. In addition to this, many of our young people may have a diagnosis of Autism, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) or Tourette’s as well as physical conditions. To personalise the teaching and support, our class sizes are no more than 10 young people.

We are looking for resilient and dynamic teacher who can inspire young people and support them to thrive. You should be able to develop and support the needs of the whole child and be committed to enabling all young people to achieve their potential. You must demonstrate tenacity coupled with experience of teaching KS3 – KS5 English. You should

have QTS and a track record as a consistently good/outstanding practitioner.

Please be aware that this post is subject to an enhanced DBS clearance check and any offer of employment is made conditional of this. You will also be required to register and pay for the DBS update service and ensure that documentary evidence is produced to ensure annual compliance and updates. The Council is a fantastic place to work. You will find an organisation that is both challenging and supportive; with a leadership impatiently adventurous in its pursuit of excellence.

There is a clear vision which is ensuring that the Council is working for communities today and building for tomorrow, we focus our resources on five key priorities:

  • A Prosperous Birmingham: through a focus on inclusive economic growth, tackling unemployment, attracting inward investment, and maximising the benefits of the Commonwealth Games.
  • An Inclusive Birmingham: through a focus on tackling poverty and inequality, empowering citizens, promoting diversity and civic pride, and supporting and enabling all children and young people to thrive.
  • A Safe Birmingham: through a focus on making the city safer, safeguarding vulnerable citizens, increasing affordable housing, and tackling homelessness.
  • A Healthy Birmingham: through a focus on tackling health inequalities, encouraging physical activity and healthy living, supporting mental health, and improving outcomes for adults with disabilities and older people.
  • A Green Birmingham: through a focus on street cleanliness, improving air quality, continuing the route to net zero, and becoming a city of nature.

We see the Council’s role as providing strategic leadership – that’s being able to visualise a new future for the city and equipping others to share our vision. We want to ensure the provision of services for all, so we can support those least able to support themselves by working with partners and putting citizens and neighbourhoods at the heart of our decision-making.

We are always looking for people who put the customer at the centre of their approach, with a commitment to excellence to help us achieve our vision.  We will support you to develop and thrive in your role, building a pathway for long-term success, with lots of development opportunities, such as apprenticeships.

In return, we offer you excellent terms and conditions, generous annual leave, a great pension scheme, well-being support, annual travel passes and discounts at a number of city centre establishments.
