Geotechnical Engineer

£31,346 - £33,782 per annum

NJC PO1

37 hours per week

This exciting, challenging and rare opportunity, based in Telford, Shropshire, requires a degree qualified Engineer with some Geotechnical experience who is looking to take the next step in their career.

The successful candidate will work in Telford & Wrekin Councils Geotechnical Engineering Team with duties in the Borough and in the unique Ironbridge World Heritage Site (WHS), the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. The Borough of Telford & Wrekin and the Ironbridge Gorge offers on-going engineering challenges found nowhere else in the UK. The Borough as well as the Gorge have been intensely mined for coal, ironstone, clay, limestone and sandstone over the past two thousand years all of which left their mark on the landscape.

In the south of the Borough, the Ironbridge Gorge was formed at the end of the last Ice Age, approximately 13,000 years ago and the ‘rapid’ erosion of the bedrock has led to the creation of very steep valley slopes. As the gorge continued to evolve, erode and deepen, the side slopes continued to collapse and fail in a series of landslides.  This has led to much of the valley sides being covered in a veneer of natural landslide debris, known as ‘Colluvium’.  This process is still ongoing as the over-steep valley sides attempts to reach a state of equilibrium. Millennium after the formation of the valley and as a direct result of the formation of the Gorge, the area was the epicentre of the Industrial Revolution.  Man-made activities, largely associated with the Industrial Revolution, including mining and the deposition of extensive mining wastes and development of the built form, further surcharged the natural slopes and locally add to the instability issue.

The Legacy of the Industrial revolution coupled with some of the most diverse geology in the United Kingdom requires excellent problem solving skills with regard to engineering, development, slope stability and contaminated land issues. The successful candidate will be tasked with monitoring, investigating, reporting on and management of these geotechnical issues. The post holder will be expected to develop and deliver engineering solutions to a wide variety of constraints.

Working under a Geotechnical Engineering Team Leader the post holder will work alongside another Geotechnical Engineer to provide assistance to the Senior Geotechnical Engineer in the councils Engineering Team. Main duties will include the design and implementation of a range of engineering schemes, to provide technical advice on civil engineering matters within the Council and to members of the public, data collection, management and monitoring of Geotechnical assets. The role requires a degree qualified engineer with some workplace experience to be able to work as part of a wider team on a very diverse range of small to medium sized engineering projects. This will require strong technical skills, the ability to solve problems, good communication skills a good understanding of Geotechnical and Geological matters.
