Voluntary Position

Redditch Borough Council has an Audit, Governance and Standards Committee as an essential element of good governance. The Committee currently comprises 9 members, all of whom are Borough Councillors. We are now looking to appoint a non-voting co-opted Independent Member to the Committee. If you are interested in enhancing the role of the Committee and in promoting good governance and are looking to make a difference then we would like to hear from you. This is a new role and any appointment will be made on an initial 12-month trial basis.

Interested candidates should ideally have financial management experience gained in accountancy, audit or management of a large budget in a medium to large organisation at a senior level. Other relevant experience that gives similar benefits will also be considered. Some knowledge of local government, corporate governance arrangements in either the public or private sector and risk management would also be helpful.

• disqualified from being an elected Member of a local authority;
• a member of any committee or sub-committee of the Council, including being a co-opted Member;
• a member of a political party (to ensure independence of the post); or
• a relative or close friend of a Member or employee of the Council.

Under the Local Government and Housing Act 1989, this post has been specified as being politically restricted. Holders of such posts are disqualified from membership of a Local Authority, the House of Commons or the European Parliament and may not hold office in a political party, canvass at elections of speak or write publicly on matters of party political controversy.
