Portland is a successful school meeting the needs of children and young people who experience Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties. Portland School is expanding and now has two sites:

  • Trent Vale – Primary pupils
  • Blythe Bridge – Secondary pupils

We are looking for dedicated and flexible individuals to join Portland School and support the teaching and learning of children with Social and Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties.

The work of a Special School Support Assistant can vary greatly depending on the individual needs of the pupils you are working with.

You must be able to empathise with children from a wide range of backgrounds and be capable of nurturing positive relationships with and between children.

You must have good communication skills and sound numeracy/literacy skills.

You will be able to function effectively as part of a team and able to make practical use of IT.

You will be willing to pursue training to become better equipped and informed in your role.

A good knowledge and understanding of how children learn, being a positive role model, and having an understanding of the challenges faced by children with recognised difficulties such as Autism, Asperger’s, ADHD, SEMH etc. is important.

Minimum essential requirements:

You must meet the national occupational standards (NOS) in Supporting Teaching and Learning Level 3 and be working at NVQ Level 3.

This is a term time only position for 32.5 hours per week worked over five days. There are vacancies at both of our sites.
