Job Details

Wychavon District Council is a Local Authority which covers a significant part of the county of Worcestershire, providing services to around 119,000 residents in the 3 main towns of Evesham, Pershore and Droitwich and the surrounding villages. The council has joint working arrangements with neighbouring Malvern Hills District Council which includes the joint Heritage Service.

We are rich in both built and natural environment heritage interest. Our joint Heritage Services team works hard to safeguard and enhance our diverse historic built and natural environment across our numerous towns, villages and landscapes, set against a context of challenging development pressures and opportunities.

Our staff are at the heart of what we do, and as a result we are always looking to recruit, develop and retain the very best talent we can find.  That's why, as well as a satisfying job, we offer a range of attractive benefits, such as Agile working arrangements, generous holiday entitlements, a pension scheme, significant opportunities for personal development, and discounted gym membership.

Conservation Officer
£20,493 - £32,234 pro rata per annum (Career Graded post)
Part Time  22.2 hours per week (Permanent)

This is your opportunity to make your mark in built heritage conservation. Working as part of our busy, high profile, multi-disciplinary Heritage Services team, Post One will focus on the provision of specialist conservation advice on planning matters generally as well as being a case officer for Listed Building Consent applications.  Post Two will bring the added opportunity to showcase your positivity, flair and public engagement skills in a range of pro-active conservation and heritage projects including conservation area appraisals and local listing. Whilst both roles will be based in Wychavon there will be occasions when you will be required to work across the Malvern Hills district as well. These are roles for the person who wants to get out there, make a difference and deliver real results on the ground.

You will have a recognised degree level qualification in historic building conservation or a closely related subject. You should also be able to demonstrate relevant work experience in a planning or built heritage environment and have the ability to independently undertake site visits across a wide geographical area.

This role requires you to be an organised, self-starter who is able to work both independently and as part of a multi-disciplinary team in delivering a professional and high profile built heritage service within the context of challenging performance measures.

You should be able to build and maintain excellent working relationships with your colleagues, the public and other heritage professionals to ensure positive heritage outcomes.

The roles will suit you if you want to experience a wide variety of heritage issues, both rural and urban and are able to rise to the challenge of balancing frequently competing objectives and priorities.

Appointment and progression through the career grade is dependant upon experience and membership of a relevant professional body eg IHBC or RTPI. Appropriately qualified and experienced candidates could expect to be appointed towards the upper end of the salary range but if you are looking to establish yourself in these roles, we still want to hear from you.

For further information about the role please contact Jim Burgin (Heritage Services Manager) on 01386 565366 or email jim.burgin@wychavon.gov.uk

Closing date: Sunday 1 November 2020

Interview date: Monday 9 November 2020 (Interviews will be via Zoom)

Working for us

Malvern Hills and Wychavon District Councils are rewarding places to work, with high levels of resident satisfaction and motivated staff who enjoy working for us. Located in south Worcestershire, both districts boast beautiful natural environments, a rich heritage and plenty to do and see. The districts are ranked the top two best rural places to live in the West Midlands and are amongst the top 30 in the country.

We pride ourselves on being progressive organisations spending time, energy and investment on what we know matters to our residents and communities – things like supporting our town centres and rural communities, creating jobs, keeping the streets clean, reducing our carbon footprint, helping people feel safe and preventing homelessness.

Working with you

Our staff are at the heart of what we do, and as a result we are always looking to recruit and develop the very best talent we can find.  That's why, as well as providing a satisfying job, we offer a range of attractive benefits, such as agile working for the majority of roles, generous holiday entitlements, a pension scheme, plenty of opportunities for personal development, and discounted gym membership.

We value skills and an ability to do a great job over identifying personal information and that’s why we anonymise all our recruitment until we reach interview stage. What you can offer us and how you will uphold our values and behaviours is really important to us and that’s what we look for during our recruitment process.

Our staff are our driving force, and it’s important our workforce reflects the communities we serve. More than 50% of our Senior Management Team is female, as is the majority of our Heads of Service.

We are a member of the Disability Confident Scheme and support the movement of change, to think differently about disability and apply this to how we recruit, retain and develop disabled people.

We value all our staff and are committed to eliminating unlawful discrimination, promoting equality of opportunity, and fostering good relations between people from a diverse range of backgrounds.

Want to know more?

The two councils have a shared Chief Executive and a joint senior management team.  Whilst they retain their own political structures and distinct identities, the joint management structure allows us to maximise the opportunity to deliver a wide range of good value services to our customers and communities, and operate and develop shared services, collaborative working  and partnership arrangements with each other,  with other councils and with key stakeholders

Whichever council you work for, you can be sure it will be an enjoyable place to work, you will feel valued and appreciated and have an opportunity to develop your career in line with your potential and expectations.
