Job Details

Development Management is a team within the Planning service area in Coventry City Council which supports the growth of the city and manages development from inception to delivery.

As a high performing planning department, we deal with a wide range of applications.  We are a dynamic and forward thinking team with a can-do approach and are always striving to improve our service.  We recognise the importance of developing a strong, robust and resilient team through learning and development.  The Enforcement team sits within the wider Development Management team and strives to proactively manage and monitor development in the city to ensure compliance is achieved.

Alongside Development Management within the Planning service area is the Planning Policy and Environment team which encompasses a number of individual but related specialisms all focussed on delivering a city for those wishing to live and work here.  Those specialisms include Strategic Planning, Ecology, Trees and Landscape, Urban Design, Conservation, Archaeology and Environmental Protection.

What is the job role?

We are looking to recruit Planning Enforcement Officers to deliver a high quality proactive Planning Enforcement service in a way that contributes to the achievement of the City Council’s vision and objectives for a growing and sustainable city. You will be enforcing all relevant legislation administered by the section under the general direction of the Planning Team Leader.

The main duties and responsibilities of the role include (but are not limited to):

  • Investigate planning enforcement complaints, identifying appropriate courses of action ensuring all relevant legislation is considered and followed.
  • Interpret technical / legal information, plans and legislation and make an initial assessment to progress each enquiry based upon the information and evidence received.
  • Support the Senior Officer in the supervision of works in default, including drafting schedules of work, site supervision and monitoring of payments.

Who are we looking for?

We are looking for someone with knowledge and understanding of Planning Enforcement and Planning Legislation. You will have the ability to interpret and implement legislation, understand and scale plans and produce detailed schedules of work.

You will be able to demonstrate effective communication at all levels both orally and in writing with people from a range of backgrounds. You will have good listening skills and the ability to convey information to customers clearly and sensitively.

To apply for this role you must have GCSE’s in English and Maths, Grade C and above. You will be proficient in the use of IT packages and have experience of using computer databases, and Microsoft packages such as PowerPoint, excel, word and outlook as this is essential.
