Who we need

Do you want to help shape the future of the Highway Network in the West Midlands?

Are you qualified to A-level standard or equivalent and interested in specialising as a Data Analyst?

We are looking for confident, committed people who work well with others and are eager to learn to join the Transport Infrastructure Skills Academy. You’ll complete a 24-month apprenticeship as a Data Analyst while helping to realise our ambition to create a fully digitised, accurate record of the West Midlands Highway Network.

No experience in transport is necessary.

About the team

Your main role will be to make progress on the digitisation of Traffic Regulation Orders (TROs) as part of the Rules of the Road Project; a workstream of the Innovation programme. TROs are legal instruments created by local authorities to regulate and implement changes on the road network. This can include features such as road markings, traffic signs, waiting restrictions and speed limits or temporary changes for roadworks and other events. The Rules of the Road project aims to make TROs fully digital and machine readable. This provides a unique opportunity to attract new entrants to the industry and provide training in the skills required to take part in this project and to fill the skills shortage faced by the Highways, Traffic and Transportation sector.

You will be based across Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) which will act as a Centre of Excellence for the Transport Infrastructure Skills Academy. As part of the Skills Academy, seven local authorities and Highways England will also act as Centres of Excellence where you’ll take part in placements. As well as providing additional resources to these partner organisations, you’ll learn about transport related specialisms from the different teams.

Who we are

This is an exciting time for the West Midlands. Along with an upturn in economic performance, a strong economic plan, creation of employment opportunities, speeding up of housing delivery and infrastructure investment, we’re also hosting Coventry’s City of Culture in 2021 and the Commonwealth games in 2022. The arrival of HS2 will help make the region a world class business location.

This is supported by a massive local programme of bus rapid transit, highway improvements, bike hire, new metro lines and local rail stations. Together we are forging new standards and new solutions for urban living and enabling social and economic growth. The region is at the epicentre of much of the UK’s research and are piloting new mobility services and data driven systems. We have a unique and substantial programme of innovation and data science which is driving a revolution in our transport system and enabling the delivery of an unprecedented scale of infrastructure investment.

TfWM plans, develops and manages an integrated transport system for the West Midlands that is reliable, affordable and accessible for all. It is the transport arm of the West Midlands Combined Authority.

A standard setter in the industry, our achievements are regularly recognised nationally, most importantly as the winner of ‘City Region Authority of the Year’ in 2016, 2017 and 2019 at the National Transport Awards.

Whether it’s developing and delivering new infrastructure, collaborating on future mobility projects, operating the West Midlands Metro or helping customers to keep moving, we need creative and innovative talent to join our already excellent team and help us make a real difference to residents, businesses and visitors travelling in and around the West Midlands.

In return for your hard work and commitment, we will reward you with a range of competitive and attractive benefits.

How to apply

Please provide detailed information in your application outlining your suitability for the post and ensure it is submitted by the closing date.

Closing Date: 6 November 2020

Interview/Assessment Date: Weeks commencing 23 November and 30 November

This is a remote working opportunity until a date is agreed for the WMCA workforce to return to our usual place of work at 16 Summer Lane, Birmingham.
