With Coventry UK City of Culture 2021 just around the corner, we are looking to expand our Food and Safety Team to help us plan and prepare to host safe events in the City. The City of Culture Trust have now announced the first events that will form part of the 365-day programme of UK City of Culture 2021, which kicks off in May 2021.

Rooted in the rich history of the city and celebrating the stories of the people who have made it their home, the programme reflects Coventry as a diverse and modern city, moving forward and embracing culture, to connect communities and change lives. Coventry is known internationally as a city of welcome, a city of activists and pioneers, a city of peace and reconciliation, a city of innovation and invention, and now a City of Culture.

Co-created with local and national partners, and grassroots organisations across Coventry, the 2021 programme will include major artistic events, world premieres and commissions across theatre, music, dance, literature, comedy and visual arts.

The successful candidates will be working in our Planning & Regulatory Services team which is made up of multi-disciplinary professionals including Licensing, Trading Standards, Food and Safety, Planning and Housing Enforcement and Property Licensing.  These specialisms embrace a range of service areas used by the community which primarily involves people, businesses or organisations needing to obtain some form of consent or are required to comply with various legal provisions.  The service area aims to:

  • Ensure that the public, visitors, workers and residents of Coventry have the right to a healthy and safe work and domestic environment;
  • Treat all regulated persons and businesses in a fair and consistent manner, through a process of education, persuasion and enforcement, ensuring that the public and businesses observe the law, and
  • Protect public health and the wider environment, whilst minimising disruption to enterprise or economic activity and reducing the legislative burden on complaint and business.

We are seeking positive, experienced, enthusiastic, talented and driven professionals who care about the development of our great city to join our busy, top performing, forward thinking team.

What is the job role?

This is an exciting opportunity to be part of a team working to prepare for City of Culture 2021. You will be working under the general direction of the Food and Safety Manager to support and coach local businesses to help drive up standards and ensure compliance with all relevant legislation administered by the department and to educate and encourage the public and business proprietors in order to improve relevant standards.

This may be by 1:1 coaching, group training or signposting to other sources of information. The focus will be on gaining compliance through education, advice and encouragement.
  • Giving advice to local businesses making enquiries, applications and requests for service as they prepare for City of Culture.
  • To advise and support new businesses to ensure early intervention to ensure they meet all legal requirements and make the correct / relevant applications in a timely manner.
  • To assist existing commercial businesses referred from Regulatory Services Officers following inspections / complaints / other interventions that they feel would benefit from some intervention.  Usually these will be poor performing businesses that are independent operators that cannot afford independent advice and would benefit from some targeted intervention.

For a full list of the main duties and responsibilities please view the job description attached below.
