We are pleased to offer a new appointment for an aspiring public health leader to work alongside us as a Consultant in Public Health. As a council we pride ourselves on our commitment to public health, as both a profession and also a philosophy for how we should look at fundamental issues affecting society. The City of Wolverhampton Council is embarking on an ambitious strategy to improve and better align public health and other services to quickly close the gap of health, care and other inequalities

The Black Lives Matter and other agendas reflective of the City’s population highlights the need for a more granular localised place-based approach, based on evidence, indices of deprivation and listening to people, families, groups and communities -as an area with significant health needs and inequalities, we offer an ideal challenge for someone who wishes to make a real difference to the lives of people who deserve better health.

In your role, you will have broad responsibility for the health protection functions of local government, as well as joint responsibility with another consultants for providing healthcare public health leadership across the city, with an important focus on health and wellbeing in older age.

Initially, a key element of the role will be to build on and deliver the city-wide health protection response to COVID-19 with key partners, working under the guidance and support of the Director of Public Health.

More broadly, your work will include working across the entire Council, Elected Members, NHS bodies and other partner agencies to advocate for and improve population health, with a particular focus on supporting the NHS and Council with their common duty to address health inequalities.

For this role, as well as meeting our eligibility criteria, you are required to bring with you a high level of understanding of health protection principles, statistical methods, epidemiology, models of health promotion, service development, and techniques for health care evaluation. Alongside these skills, you will show that you have the interpersonal, management and leadership qualities needed to build strong working relationships with colleagues and partners. The right candidate should demonstrate an overarching desire and attitude to use their skills, expertise and knowledge to drive and ensure a more effective Public Health Service capable of meeting both City-wide and specific smaller area demands.
