Deputy Headteacher - Newport Girls High School
Permanent (Full Time)

Salary L16-20

The Governors and Headteacher are delighted to offer a rare opportunity to make a significant contribution to the leadership of one of the UK’s leading Girls’ Grammar Schools. Following the retirement of our Deputy Headteacher, we seek an outstanding, enthusiastic and very personable leader to join us in April or September 2021. The successful candidate will have the full support of our Governing Body and senior leadership team. S/he can expect to lead on a wide portfolio of responsibilities, both academic and pastoral, and the post will provide excellent preparation for Headship. No previous leadership specialism is sought, rather we are looking to appoint the right person to complement our existing senior leadership team.

Our girls and staff work very hard together and the ‘NGHS Family’ is often mentioned by members of the school and wider community. The wellbeing of students and staff is our top priority. There are pressures to do well, but also a real desire to seize every opportunity and give something back to the school. Our House system is very strong and pastoral care is exceptional with a number of teaching and non-teaching staff holding additional pastoral responsibilities.

In October 2019, Ofsted inspected Newport Girls’ High School and looked particularly at our three-year KS4 curriculum. Ultimately, they agreed that our curriculum implementation suits our girls’ needs and that the school continues to offer an outstanding education. Subsequently, NGHS was ranked as the West Midlands School of the Year by The Sunday Times; together with recent awards for Mental Health support, School Games Gold Mark, Eco Schools and as a Beacon School for Holocaust Education with UCL.

Our new Deputy Headteacher will join the School at an exciting time. We will be moving to four-form entry in September with a new Selective Schools Expansion Fund extension (comprising a dining hall, kitchens, science laboratory, IT suite, four classrooms and drama studio) being opened by January 2022.  Part of this project involves developing even stronger links with local primary schools to encourage greater social mobility among applicants to NGHS.

As an outstanding classroom practitioner and leader in a smaller school, the successful candidate will be expected to teach around 8 weekly periods, mostly in their academic specialism. No particular subject specialism is sought. Since the Covid-19 lockdown, the School has delivered high-quality learning provision through Microsoft Teams and this has been very well-received by pupils and parents alike.

Socially distanced visits to the school will be possible. Alternatively, the Headteacher, Michael Scott, is very happy to have conversations with interested candidates via Microsoft Teams. Please email headteacher@nghs.org.uk if you wish to take up either offer.

Closing date – Monday 11 January at 9am.

Details of how to apply are included on the final page of the candidate information brochure. CVs are not accepted.

NGHS is an equal opportunities employer.  We are committed to the equality of opportunity for all staff and applications from individuals are encouraged regardless of age, disability, sex, gender reassignment, sexual orientation, pregnancy/maternity, race, religion or belief. The successful applicant will be subject to an enhanced DBS, Barred List check and other recruitment checks in line with Keeping Children Safe in Education Safer Recruitment practices. This includes sourcing police checks for any period of time spent abroad.
