Job Details

The role of the Early Years’ Service is to:

  • Lead and facilitate strategic development for Early Years across the City, working with a range of partners
  • Raise educational standards and quality in private, voluntary and independent (PVI) childcare provision and Schools, for children aged birth to 5 years
  • Provide market management to secure sufficient registered childcare and education places
  • Secure and fund early years provision which is free of charge to parents
  • Provide advice and guidance to extended childcare provision for children beyond the age of 5 years.  

It is also the role of the team to provide childcare related advice to parents and carers. Early years officers liaise with PVI providers, schools, parents/carers and other external agencies to achieve the best outcomes for young children.

What is the job role?

We are seeking to appoint a motivated and passionate early years specialist to join our successful team within the Early Years Service.

The purpose of this role is to achieve the highest standards of education in Coventry schools, early years settings and childminders. This will be achieved through the provision of effective challenge, support and workforce development to raise the quality and standard of educational provision and improve outcomes.

The postholder will work in Schools and Early Years settings across the city providing advice, support and training as well as monitoring the quality of early years education. There will be opportunities to identify areas for improvement at a local and more strategic level and play a part in bringing this to fruition.

They will work alongside senior officers within the Early Years Service, supporting delivery of the full remit of the Local Authorities statutory duty for early years: https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/early-education-and-childcare--2 

The post holder will lead and manage a team of education improvement and sufficiency advisers who work predominantly within the private voluntary and independent sector.

The day to day work is varied and interesting, it includes supporting providers who are just starting out in their delivery early years education, those who need intensive support after a poor inspection outcome and planning training and briefing sessions for the early years sector. Direct work with Schools will include a focus on improving standards and closing the attainment gap for disadvantaged groups.

We are developing an approach to ‘early years system leadership’ to improve workforce development through opportunities for collaboration.

 

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).

Who are we looking for?

The successful candidate will be open minded, flexible and excited about the development of new ideas and initiatives. They will have the skills to provide challenge in a way that facilitates change, whilst sustaining positive relationships and engagement.

Key Requirements

  • Qualified Teacher Status
  • Proven ability to fulfil the professional duties set out in the current School Teachers’ Pay and Conditions Document and the National Standards for Qualified Teacher Status
  • Experience of leadership in the early years education
  • The ability to travel to Schools and early years settings across the City

The post would suit a qualified teacher who has extensive leadership experience and has worked beyond their own organisation in providing support, advice and training, for example school moderation.

Candidates should be able to demonstrate knowledge, skills and experiences related to:

  • A clear philosophy for Early Years education with the ability to articulate this, promote and maintain networks and communication between professionals across the sector, working collaboratively with a range of partners to develop effective Early Years practice.
  • Sufficient knowledge and expertise in the areas of: early years leadership, curriculum, assessment, teaching and learning, environment and closing the gap with proven impact.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills, and leadership skills with the ability to form strong relationships, motivate and influence teams and secure high performance.
  • Experience leading teams in Schools to develop the quality of teaching, leading to improved standards and educational outcomes
  • The ability to promote and safeguard the welfare and achievement of children who live or access services in, or who are looked after by, Coventry City Council.
