Job Details
The Headteacher and Governing Body of John Gulson Primary School are seeking to appoint an ambitious, effective and inspiring practitioner to be the new Head of Teaching, Learning and Curriculum.
We know that education has the power to transform lives. At John Gulson, staff, Governors, families and pupils are united in their mission to excel and secure the best possible future for each person within our care by laying the foundations for high academic achievement and all-round personal development.
The school is in the process of undergoing significant change following a restructure consultation. We have come a long way since September 2020 and we want to build upon this. This role is new to the school and will work alongside the new Head of Safeguarding, SEND, Behaviour and Pastoral Care. The successful candidate will be responsible for improving standards in teaching and learning from Nursery to Year 6, and for the development of a bespoke ‘John Gulson’ curriculum, building upon the improvements made this year and ensuring that our wonderful children have access to a curriculum that will engage, inspire and enthuse; a curriculum that is fit for 21st century citizens. The successful candidate will report directly to the Headteacher.
We are looking for someone who:
- Will uphold the inclusive principles that are integral to our ethos, values and vision;
- Has a proven track-record of using and applying evidence-based teaching and learning strategies;
- Will keep abreast of developments in teaching, learning and curriculum at national, regional and local levels and disseminate this knowledge effectively to staff;
- Is an exemplary teacher, having also had experience at coaching classroom based staff at all phases of the Primary phase (inc. Nursery);
- Is an experienced senior leader who is able to provide strong, focused and professional leadership;
- Can work alongside the data lead (the Headteacher) to ensure a continued and sustained rise in standards;
- Has a full understanding of both adult and child mental health and well-being;
- Is a team player who is ready for a challenge!
This post will suit an experienced Senior Leader looking for exciting new challenges and ready to take the next step in their career. You will need to provide evidence of an outstanding 'track record' to date. You will need to be a child centred leader who would relish the opportunity to collaborate with our aspirational families.
We will offer you the opportunity to be part of a new, exciting and forward-thinking Core Senior Leadership Team; a chance to join us on this exciting journey of improvement where there are simply no limits; and a full commitment to your ongoing CPD and well-being.
This is a non-class-based role although there will be a PPA teaching commitment in Year 6 of 1.5 days per week.
Start date 1 September 2021 (or earlier if possible)
If you feel you can meet all of the above criteria and more, please contact Ms V Sumner, Headteacher, on 02476 227791 for a further discussion and to arrange a visit to the school (abiding by Covid-19 risk assessment restrictions).
Closing date for applications: Friday 19th February 2021 at 12pm.
An application pack is available to download below. Completed applications to be sent directly to the School Business Manager, Mrs F Macnab:

This post is exempted under the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and as such appointment to this post will be conditional upon the receipt of a satisfactory response to a check of police records via Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS).
This School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment.
